What Are the Most Popular Sunglasses in Each U.S. State and Territory?

Have you ever wondered what the most popular brand of sunglasses is in your state? We were definitely curious! To find the answer to this question, we decided to do a bit of research. 

It turns out that finding hard data on the most popular shades by state was fairly difficult. So, to get the information we wanted, we decided to look at search volume data in Google for various sunglass brands in each state and territory in the USA. We then recorded the most-searched-for brand in each area as the most popular. Read more about how we came up with this list in our Methodology section below.

What brand of sunglasses is the most popular in your state or territory? According to our research, the answer is most likely Ray-Ban, Oakley or Costa — unless you live in the Northern Mariana Islands, where it is Maui Jim.

Most states and territories have several brands with high popularity, and many have tight competition among the top three brands. A few even have ties for the top position.

To be inclusive of all Americans, we examined search data across every U.S. state and all major territories. All 50 U.S. states and the six territories (including the District of Columbia) have their top 10 brands listed below in order of the most-searched to the least. Methodology

To determine what the most popular brand of sunglasses is in each state, we used a free tool provided by Google called the Google Ads Keyword Planner. This tool provides advertisers with estimates of keyword search volume in Google’s search engine. 

We were able to find the search volume for each brand of sunglasses by using the brand name plus the word “sunglasses” as our keyword phrase across all brands. This helped keep our study uniform and ensured we were only measuring interest in the sunglasses made by a brand — and not other products a brand or designer might make.

The Google Ads Keyword Planner tool allows users to view search data broken down by a defined region in a specific period of time. We examined keyword data over the same period of time (the past 12 months) in each state and territory. This ensured our data was both relevant and comparable between regions. 

We performed each search for one specific state or territory only, and then we exported this data before performing a search for another state or territory. This ensured our data was based only on the region we were examining and reduced the chance of introducing human errors. 

For areas where more than one brand tied for the top position, we used Google Image Search to look for photos of people wearing sunglasses in certain regions over the past year. The brand of sunglasses that appeared in the most images was elevated to first place. 

In cases where multiple brands tied with low search volume at a position below number one, we used a randomizer to place the brands in a random order. This occurred in Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands most notably.
