Are bimatoprost eyelash serums safe for your eyes?
What is bimatoprost ophthalmic solution?
Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution is a prescription medication used to treat eyelash hypotrichosis, a condition when someone has too few eyelashes.
When used to promote eyelash growth, bimatoprost is applied to the skin at the base of the upper eyelashes.
Bimatoprost was first used as an eye-drop medication to lower pressure inside the eye. Longer-looking eyelashes were observed as a side effect, and a version of the medication was later approved for eyelash growth.
Because bimatoprost can affect the eyes and surrounding skin, it’s important to talk with an eye doctor before using it.
How does bimatroprost formulations work for eyelash growth?
The exact way bimatoprost formulations promotes eyelash growth is not fully understood.
Eyelashes grow in cycles. They sprout, grow for a period of time and eventually fall out. Bimatoprost is believed to affect this cycle by increasing the number of hairs in the growth phase and how long that phase lasts.
When prescribed for eyelash growth, bimatoprost formulations are typically applied along the upper lash line with a sterile applicator.
Results are not immediate. Some people may begin to notice changes after several weeks of routine use. If you stop using bimatoprost, expect your eyelashes to gradually return to their previous appearance.
