FAQ: Are sunglasses covered by FSA/HSA?

Prescription sunglasses are eligible for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA) and a health savings account (HSA). Prescription sunglasses are not eligible for reimbursement under a dependent care flexible spending account — a pre-tax account used to pay for eligible dependent care services.

A prescription for sunglasses must be provided by an eye doctor, and the sunglasses must be used to correct vision problems and/or be designed to treat a specific medical condition to be eligible for reimbursement.

Over-the-counter sunglasses that do not require a prescription are not covered under FSA and HSA plans.

Other FSA/HSA-eligible vision expenses include:

  • Contact lenses
  • Prescription eyeglasses
  • Eye care co-pays and deductibles
  • Routine eye exams

Make sure you check with your account administrator on what is covered by your company’s FSA and HSA policies to verify what is eligible for reimbursement.
