Google Glass to Resemble Normal Eyewear Soon?
March 2014 Google Glass may never look completely normal. But Google has taken a step in the right direction by collaborating with an eyewear company to upgrade the design of the device as well as distribute it.
The company is Luxottica Group, which owns Ray-Ban and Oakley among other well-known brands. Luxottica and Google have been working on making the eyewear more fashionable so that more people will be willing to give it a try. Specific design details are not yet available, however.
Plans for prescription lens options are also in the works, according to a January agreement between Google and vision care company VSP Global.
Cleopatra Frame Makes a Natural Statement With Exotic Woods
January 2014 In a nod toward Mother Nature, three new frames in the Rye&Lye collection from Italy feature beautiful exotic woods.
Shown is "Cleopatra," a women's frame in a 1950s chunky cat-eye shape.
According to the manufacturer, the curves of the temples were specially designed to enhance the natural grain in the wood.
Not shown are the butterfly-shaped "Ermione" and the masculine frame "Edgar," with wood trim applied to lightweight acetate and aluminum elements.
New Evo-Tec Frames Celebrate a Colorful New Year
January 2014 Chasing away the winter blahs, these new combination frames by Ogi Eyewear mix acetate in deep or vivid colors with stainless steel in coordinating metallic hues.
Each lightweight frame comes in several color choices, and various eye shapes are available, for both men and women.
Shown here is style 4811 in purple, a curvy rectangular shape for women. It combines a purple tortoise pattern fading to light blue inside with solid purple on the temples and black temple tips. The look cheers up wintry apparel and complements the brightly colored prints we'll be wearing this spring.
January 2014 Striped patterns are making their way onto frames in a big way. Earth-tone stripes add texture and interest, while stripes in brights and lights can jazz up your look with a sporty, French vibe.
Shown here is a new style by Plume Paris called "Clamart," in blues and greenish-yellows.
Wear it with jeans for a laid-back weekend, or with a mod-print shift dress for a fashion-forward day at the office.
Arnette Plays a New Tune With its Just-Released Prescription Frame Line
November 2013 Arnette is well known among the skate/surf/snowboard crowd for high-performance sunglasses and goggles. Now the company has launched a frame line in the United States that offers the same cool vibe for prescription eyeglass wearers.
The Arnette Optical collection has nine crisp models, some only for guys but most of which are sized for unisex wear.
Shown here is "Dub," a statement frame that comes in matte black, striped havana, blue ice and black on grey horn (shown).
The classic rock band theme is reprised with the other styles as well, mainly in acetate: Roadie, Sync, Holly, Auxiliary, Fader, Mixer, Frontman and Lo-Fi. Please click here for closeup photos of several of the new Arnette frames.
Young, Self-Assured Looks for Guys and Gals by Smith Optics
November 2013 Smith Optics has launched four new frames for fall, each with a classically confident vibe that will make you stand out from the crowd.
Two of the frames are unisex, with larger sizing. The other two are women's frames, sized for small to medium faces.
Each frame has spring hinges and comes in four different color combinations, including pairings of opaque and translucent acetate.
Pictured here is "Debate," a women's style shown in champagne. The frame also comes in black crystal, burgundy blush and apple tortoise.
Large-Sized Frames With a Fashionable Look
October 2013 Timex Max has released four new men's frames for fall, all with a hard-to-find larger fit.
The frames are durable and lightweight, according to the company, and come in sizes ranging from 56 mm to 58 mm. Extra long temples and spring hinges make them even more suitable for men with large heads.
The styling is modern, with brushed stainless steel finishes, color striping and a rimless bottom lens option.
Translucent Frames: A Lighter Look
June 2013 One of this year's most popular eyewear trends is light, colorful, translucent plastic.
These frames suit delicate facial features and work beautifully with the floral prints now trending in apparel and accessories.
Shown here are Regina, Julietta and Leslie, three pretty frames from the BCBGMAXAZRIA collection for women.
Also shown is style 1012 from the Cole Haan collection, in a tortoise/crystal combination that lightens up the chunky, retro design.
Try Change Lets You Change Up Your Look in a Snap
June 2013 Ever get tired of your glasses? The new Try Change frame collection has a solution for you: interchangeable temples.
The frames come in a variety of shapes, from round to rectangular, and in several colors for each shape. Both rimless and full-rim styles are available.
And each pair comes with an extra pair of temples in a carefully chosen different color, so you can switch them out to match your outfit or your mood.
Shown here is style TH 107 in a brown/orange combination; it comes with extra temples in black.
ProDesign Promotes Environmental Consciousness
With Biodegradable Frames
May 2013 ProDesign Denmark has released seven new frames for men and women who want a natural look in a sustainable material.
These frames may look like wood, but they're actually made of a biodegradable acetate material, brushed on the surface to simulate wood grain.
The shapes are retro and substantial, but with clean lines. Each style comes in three or four colors, in dark or light wood tones (some two-toned), with beta titanium nose pad arms.

Frame Trend: Not-So-Mellow Yellow
April 2013 This year's neon colors in fashion have also made their way into eyewear designs. Most notable is the new fascination with the color yellow.
Often, yellow is used as an accent color in frames or is paired with another strong color, as in the purple and yellow patterned frame shown here ("Albi" in the Plume Paris eyewear collection).
Hues range from lemon to squash to citron, and they look especially fabulous on people with dark skin or auburn hair.
Rising Stars in the OGI Eyewear Collection for Spring/Summer
April 2013 OGI Eyewear has debuted 20 new frames this spring, and the two most popular are shown here.
Both are examples of the continuing fashion focus on tortoise patterns in unusual colors, such as blue and red.
At top is style 7149 in blue cabana, with smoothed corners and a translucent material. Other color choices include green, purple and brown.
Below that is style 5503, a semi-rimless in a slightly cat-eye shape with a matte metallic titanium front. Color combinations include burgundy/crimson tiger, blue/blue tiger and olive/gray tiger, as well as the brown/amber tiger combination shown here.
On-Trend Frame Designs From the Luxury Fashion House Chloe
April 2013 In many ways, the new Chloe eyewear for spring/summer echoes the fashion house's runway looks. Colors include navy blue, soft pink and cream, with shiny gold bands and silver accents. The look is futuristic and sophisticated.
Shown here is Chloe CE2104, an oversized metal frame in a two-tone color combination. Other designs include a metal aviator and an upswept chunky cateye.
