- After Cataract Surgery
Even if you see clearly and feel great immediately after your procedure, follow-up appointments are very important after cataract surgery.
Sometimes follow-up appointments are performed at the surgeon's office, and in other cases, the surgeon may ask you to return to your regular eye doctor.
In most cases, these visits are scheduled for the day after surgery, one week after surgery, one month after surgery, and three months after surgery.
The initial "post-op" exam the day after your surgery often is performed by your cataract surgeon. The other visits may be with your surgeon or your general eye care provider.
If your optometrist or ophthalmologist performs a portion of your post-operative care, he or she will communicate with your cataract surgeon and refer you back to the surgeon if any issues arise.
Most people are very interested in finding out how much their vision has improved after cataract surgery, but this isn't the only thing your doctor is looking at. In fact, while your vision may be checked as soon as the day after surgery, your surgeon does not expect your vision to be at its best this quickly, so don't feel discouraged if you can't read all the letters on the eye chart. Improvement comes with time.
Be sure to wear protective eyewear for sports and safety glasses when needed after your cataract surgery, and continue seeing your eye doctor for regular annual visits to monitor your eye health and vision.
