Dr. Stephen Updegraff
Serving patients seeking bladeless LASIK in Tampa, St. Petersburg and the surrounding area
Stephen Updegraff, MD, FACS, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained refractive surgeon and pioneering LASIK specialist based in Tampa Bay, Florida. Dr. Updegraff's experience with LASIK extends back nearly two decades, when he was a member of a unique team of surgeons studying and perfecting LASIK in the mid-1990s in Bogota, Colombia, prior to its introduction to the United States. He then went on to perform the third LASIK surgery in the U.S. and the first in Asia, where he demonstrated the procedure to hundreds of Chinese doctors, and has also earned seven U.S. patents for developing instruments and techniques used in LASIK and microsurgery of the eye. Dr. Updegraff has been named one of the "Best Doctors in America" by Tampa Bay Metro Magazine for three years and has been featured as an expert in his field in media outlets such as the St. Petersburg Times, The Tampa Tribune and Bay News 9. Dr. Updegraff frequently trains other ophthalmologists in eye surgery and participates in educational videos, conferences and lectures pertaining to laser eye surgery.
In addition to LASIK, Dr. Updegraff specializes in advanced laser cataract surgery with high-technology lens implants, as well as other advanced refractive surgery procedures. His commitment to patient safety and excellent surgical outcomes has earned him a reputation as a "rare breed" among eye surgeons, which is why most of Dr. Updegraff's new patients are referred to him by his current patients or fellow physicians.

More About Vision Correction at Updegraff Vision
Precision LASIK™ by Updegraff is a unique laser vision correction method Dr. Updegraff has spent the past decade developing. It combines the best technology with his patented instruments and a safety check system that ensures patient safety and maximum accuracy during every step of the procedure. Precision LASIK™ is a bladeless surgery, meaning Dr. Updegraff uses a femtosecond laser to create the corneal flap, a thin piece of tissue that is lifted from the surface of the eye to expose the stroma (middle layer of the cornea). He then uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea, thereby correcting nearsightedness and astigmatism. In order to correct higher-order aberrations (subtle refractive errors that cannot be detected with conventional equipment), he uses specialized iris recognition tracking equipment combined with customized Wavefront technology to ensure the best visual outcome. Dr. Updegraff also uses a Pentacam corneal mapping computer, which gives him a 3D map of the patient's uniquely shaped cornea and refractive errors. Most patients who undergo LASIK surgery under the care of Dr. Updegraff are able to achieve excellent vision and reduce their dependency on corrective eyewear, usually within 24 to 48 hours after surgery.
What Do Patients Say About Dr. Updegraff?
"After asking around about LASIK, I kept hearing about Dr. Steve Updegraff. Everyone I spoke to about him kept saying things like "the best" and how smooth the whole procedure was. After making a call, the staff at Updegraff Vision took over. I was able to fly direct in to St Pete and once I hit the ground, everything was taken care of... transportation, hotels, everything. The entire trip was simple and easy!
As a film producer, diver, fisherman and pilot, the clarity and vision that LASIK with Dr. Updegraff has allowed me has really opened the world in a lot of ways. I see more fish, can film underwater and fly safer with zero strain and headaches. I wish I would have done this years ago!" Jose Wejebe, world-class angler, film producer, creator of the award-winning Outdoor Channel show Spanish Fly
"The Updegraff difference has changed my view of everything and everyone around me. One of my proudest moments after LASIK surgery was gathering all my contact lens kits, solutions, and eye drops, and throwing them into the trash! And, all of the years of scratched and ulcerated corneas are now a thing of the past. I now have 20/20 vision, thanks to the LASIK guy, Dr. Steve Updegraff, at Updegraff Vision!" Bobby Goldsboro, singer
"When Steve first introduced us to LASIK in 1995, I was very interested. But, in my field excellent vision is critical. I wanted to see an excellent track record with long-term follow-up. With 30,000 procedures in 11+ years, we have that. We are very fortunate to have a pioneer in the LASIK procedure with unmatched expertise. More importantly, Steve is a consummate professional. His personality, compassion, ethics, intelligence, judgment, and attention to detail are outstanding. As a physician I understand the importance of these qualities and have a great respect for and confidence in Steve. In short, he is a doctor's doctor and I would not have had LASIK performed by anyone else. With great thanks to Steve and entire staff," John Kirk, M.D.
"I have been amazed by the results from LASIK. My vision is stronger than ever, and I'm no longer bothered by fatigue and irritation from extensive use of contacts. I thank Dr. Updegraff and his entire staff for the smoothest and easiest procedure imaginable. They exceeded all of my lofty expectations." Matt Silverman, President, Tampa Bay Rays
