More About George Tate, MD
George Tate, MD, is the Regional Medical Director at TLC Charleston, and was the first surgeon in the Carolinas to perform refractive surgery. Dr. Tate studied under Dr. Jose Ignacio Barraquez, the inventor of keratomileusis, which is the procedure that later evolved into LASIK. Throughout his career Dr. Tate has performed more than 20,000 LASIK procedures, and is proud to offer his patients Custom Wavefront LASIK and the IntraLase technology, which allows for Blade-Free LASIK.
Dr. Tate received a master’s degree in bio-physics and neurophysiology at the University of Texas and earned his medical degree from Texas Southwestern Medical School. He was an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Southwestern and a clinical instructor in the Tulane Ophthalmology Department. Dr. Tate also served in the United States Army, where he served as a flight surgeon and was decorated with the National Defense Ribbon and the Army Commendation Medal.
Dr. Tate has received the VISX Star Award, which places him in the top 5% of refractive surgeons in the nation and he recently was selected as one of “Americas Top Ophthalmologists.” He is an international lecturer and author of numerous works on ophthalmic surgery, and was also a principal investigator for the Chiron Technolas laser to perform PRK and LASIK under FDA-mandated protocol.
Dr. Tate is a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Society for Excellence in Eye Care and many other local medical societies.
