The vision correction team at Shapiro Laser Eye Center is extremely well-qualified, having assisted Dr. Shapiro in over 20,000 procedures over the past 17 years.
Shapiro Laser Eye Center houses some of the world's most advanced laser vision correction technologies, including the VISX CustomVue Wavescan Aberrometer, a state-of-the-art device used to create a detailed "optical fingerprint" of each patient's cornea, as well as the VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser platform, one of the most accurate lasers available.
The Shapiro Laser Eye Center's leading-edge surgical suite includes an advanced microfiltration system as well as environmental controls to maximize air purity, temperature, humidity and flow rates, ensuring the atmosphere is right for their equipment so that it delivers the best possible visual outcomes.
During the LASIK procedure, Dr. Shapiro uses the VISX CustomVue Wavescan Aberrometer to create a customized "optical fingerprint" (3-D map) of the patient's cornea. (This is used to program the excimer laser prior to surgery). Dr. Shapiro then makes a tiny flap on the surface of the cornea and utilizes the VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser system to alter the shape of the cornea. Next, the flap is returned to its original location. The procedure usually takes just a few minutes, after which most patients experience improved vision.
Patients who are not good candidates for LASIK may choose another type of wavefront-guided surgery known as wavefront-guided photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). This procedure does not involve the creation of a corneal flap; instead the customized laser treatment is applied directly to the surface of the eye. Dr. Shapiro can assist you in determining which procedure is best for your situation.
