San Diego Refractive Surgery Procedures

LASIK surgery has become widely popular throughout the United States, and in particular, San Diego and Southern California. With their outside lifestyles, many San Diego residents want to be free of glasses or contact lenses. LASIK and other types of laser eye surgery can eliminate the need to deal with contact lenses while surfing or swimming off of Windansea Beach, or trying to adjust glasses while cycling around Mission Bay. Laser eye surgery was first approved by the FDA in 1995 in the United States and since that time there have been many improvements. Most San Diego LASIK patients see clearly the next day after surgery and there is little pain or discomfort.

LASIK: About the Procedure

The first step of the LASIK procedure is to create a corneal flap. The flap is a thin layer of cornea tissue that, when lifted, exposes the internal portions of the cornea. The flap can be created with a blade, called a microkeratome. It can also be done with a laser, which is called "blade free" or "all laser" LASIK. After the flap has been created, the surgeon folds back the flap and uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea. Each burst of energy from the excimer laser removes a minute piece of corneal tissue. After the excimer laser has been used, then the San Diego LASIK surgeon gently replaces the flap. The flap serves as a natural bandage.

Consult a San Diego LASIK Surgeon

If you are considering laser eye surgery, then it is best to consult a highly qualified eye surgeon. He or she can determine if you are a LASIK San Diego candidate or if another type of laser eye surgery, such as PRK, Epi-LASIK or LASEK, are more suitable for your level of correction and thickness of the cornea. Many of these surgeons also offer comprehensive eye health care and anti aging facial cosmetic procedures, such as BOTOX and eyelid surgery. Botox injections can reduce or eliminate wrinkles around the eyes. Eyelid surgery, or technically known as blepharoplasty, is used to tighten drooping eye lids. For cosmetic procedures for the body, a LASIK surgeon may be able to recommend a local San Diego plastic surgeon that can perform procedures like breast augmentation in San Diego. To enhance the smile, a San Diego cosmetic dentist is the best option.

Between visiting colleges, San Diego has plenty of places to sight see, including the world-famous San Diego Zoo and the Cabrillo National Monument.
