A New Generation of Laser Vision Correction
Dr. Rashid is fortunate to be able to provide his patients with the choice of more than one type of advanced laser technology. He only performs Custom LASIK and PRK, which rely on incredibly accurate measurements of the eye, to ensure highest level of safety and accuracy. He achieves this degree of accuracy thanks to several advanced testing and laser technologies.
PENTACAM: There is no diagnostic device that is more detailed, accurate and helpful in determining a patient's candidacy for laser vision correction, as the Pentacam. This device utilizes a sophisticated camera system that scans the outer surface of the eye and takes up to 25,000 measurements. These measurements allow the doctor to view the eye from 25 different angles, unparalleled by any previous technology.
Wavefront Technology: Prior to Wavefront technology, all treatments were based on eyeglass prescription measurements obtained from the familiar "Which do you see better, 1 or 2?" instrument. Wavefront technology measures the unique, fingerprint-like distortions of the cornea, allowing for an individualized or "custom" treatment of the eye.
In LASIK, the cornea is reshaped under the top layer of corneal tissue (a flap), while in PRK the surface of the cornea itself is reshaped. Dr. Rashid uses the IntraLase laser to perform the first step of the LASIK procedure. The IntraLase laser is the new alternative to the microkeratome; a handheld bladed device. The IntraLase laser creates smoother corneal flaps, enhancing visual results and reducing the risk of flap complications as compared to microkeratome. If you're considering LASIK surgery, understand that not all surgeons offer IntraLase.
There are a variety of lasers that can be used to perform the second step of LASIK which involves reshaping of the cornea. However, Dr. Rashid offers two of the latest lasers approved by the FDA: CUSTOM VUE VISX and the ALLEGRETTO WAVE.
CUSTOM VUE VISX LASER: is the most widely used laser in the U.S. since the beginning of LASIK surgery. It offers patients a high level of safety and accuracy. This treatment can be very helpful for patients with slightly thin corneas and other difficult prescriptions.
The ALLEGRETTO WAVE LASER: uses a "wavefront optimized" technology. The laser beam profile and eye tracking system are specifically designed for maintaining the corneal curvature for each patient, thereby correcting and preventing the likelihood of night vision halos and glare.
PRK and LASIK are very similar in many ways. Dr. Rashid uses the same advanced lasers and technology to reshape the cornea when performing PRK. While in LASIK the cornea is reshaped under to top layer of the corneal tissue (a flap), in PRK, the surface of the cornea itself is reshaped. Therefore, for patients with unusual and/or thin corneas, PRK is the preferred choice, as it tends to preserve more corneal tissue.
The final visual result from both procedures is also almost identical. While LASIK patients experience less discomfort and a faster recovery, PRK patients will achieve the same results over a longer period of time.
Laser Vision Center:
When Dr. Rashid founded the Alamo Laser Vision Center his #1 goal was to provide the very best surgical care and to have the most advanced lasers and facility available. Dr. Rashid understands that every eye is unique and as a result he has always been dedicated to incorporating the best technology available.
Cataracts and Lens Implants:
Dr. Rashid performs the newest procedures treating cataracts and presbyopia, called intraocular lens implants (IOLs). These multi-focal and accommodative lenses replace the natural lens of the eye and correct patient's vision for both near and distance. They were designed specifically for patients over 45 years old who wanted to completely eliminate the need for glasses or contacts. In FDA clinical trials, 94 percent of the patients were able to read the newspaper and drive without glasses after a multi-focal implant procedure.
