Why LASIK Now?

Who should I see for vision correction?

Millennials are reporting in record numbers that they plan to have LASIK. One of the main reasons is the tremendous financial advantage LASIK gives them. According to The Vision Council, U.S. consumers spend over $8 billion a year on glasses and contacts. That's a lot of money wasted just to "rent" your vision.

What Causes Blurry Vision?

Roughly 42 percent of Americans have myopia, which makes it difficult to see across the room and other far distances. The average age that myopia gets detected is 7 years old, and the occurrence of myopia in the population is steadily increasing. In contrast to the high prevalence of myopia today, only one quarter of Americans were nearsighted in the 1970s!

Heredity is a factor in myopia, but it is not the only one. Lots of time looking at things up close during childhood increases the risk of myopia. As we all know, kids are spending more and more time on their parents' smart phones and tablets, which isn't necessarily a good thing for their eyes. Research shows that spending more time outdoors can lower kids' risk for myopia.

For most nearsighted people, myopia worsens gradually over time during childhood, requiring stronger glasses each year. This gradual progression stops once they become adults. At this time, their distance vision stabilizes and they become candidates for a vision correction procedure. For many people, the best time to have LASIK is the earliest age of ocular maturity. Old enough to vote? Old enough to serve in the military? If that's the case, the FDA-approval labeling for LASIK says you may be eligible for vision correction — as early as age 18!

LASIK: The New Normal for Vision

A whopping 76 percent of millennials say they're likely to have a vision correction procedure. In the past, people with blurry vision resigned themselves to a lifetime of dealing with the hassle of glasses and contacts. Luckily, today there is a better way! With treatments such as modern LASIK, poor vision can be corrected.

LASIK Benefits

  • LASIK is 5 times safer than wearing contacts
  • You are 180 times more likely to develop a serious infection from contact lens use than from LASIK
  • LASIK does not wear off — the effects have been shown to be long-lasting
  • LASIK has extremely high satisfaction rates, exceeding 99 percent in some studies
  • LASIK is quick and comfortable — treatment is fast and recovery time is minimal
  • Most people return to work or school the next day
  • LASIK saves you money — with the one-time cost of LASIK, you'll save tens of thousands of dollars over your lifetime by ending the cycle of buying glasses and contacts

What Dr. Parkhurst's Patients Say

Parkhurst NuVision LASIK. Real Patients, Real Results.

"I haven't had good vision since I was in my 30s, and now I can see as far as you can shoot! I have very good vision in both eyes now, and I wake up every morning and thank the good Lord for my good vision. I don't wear glasses at all, I'm giving them all away." —Charline McCombs, Matriarch of one of Texas's most philanthropic families

"One of the best surgeons in the world and he's right here in San Antonio! And if you're not in San Antonio, we're a great city to visit while you come for appointments. Fabulous staff too! I can't say enough about them. I've considered LASIK for 10 years and went as far as pre op appointments with other doctors, but backed out because of doubts. There are so many factors for getting the best possible vision and I had only ever been presented with mono vision (correcting one eye for distance and one for reading) prior to meeting Dr. Parkhurst. That just didn't sound right to me."

"Dr. Parkhurst and staff took all the time needed to answer questions and listen to what I wanted and I actually understood how and why things would happen. We've completed one eye and I'm ecstatic! I can see road signs and billboards and road graffiti! I can read license plates! I hated contacts and glasses and could function without them, but now I can actually see!! No more blinking a bunch and then rapidly spewing out the first letters that I see as I try to pass my eye test for the DMV. To settle my nerves, we opted to go work on the non-dominant eye first. A slower process, but I'm ok with that. Now, we start on the other eye, so my vision will only get better. I know without a doubt that this was the right decision."

"If you are unsure like I was, give Dr. Parkhurst a try. You will not regret it, and you will lose nothing but a little of time in a consultation." —Gayle Cox, CPA

"My experience with Dr. Parkhurst has been wonderful. He's made my eye sight such better than before that I threw my glasses away. My vision improved tremendously that I can do my job without a hassle. Thanks to Dr. Parkhurst and his professional staff for my better vision and for a explaining to me every single step of the way!" —Tim B., Builder
