LASIK and Laser Eye Surgery in the Desert
Palm Springs and Palm Desert LASIK patients have benefited from many recent advances in refractive surgery. Laser eye surgery for correcting vision was first approved by the FDA in the mid 1990s. Since that time, millions of patients, including many patients in the Palm Desert and Palm Springs region, have been able to eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses through this new technology. The technology was first approved for the treatment of myopia. Myopia is nearsightedness that occurs because the shape of the eye is too curved, causing images to focus in front of the retina. The LASIK procedure flattens the cornea and allows the light rays to be properly focused on the back of the eye. Now the procedure is approved for myopia, hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. You can use the LASIK Palm Springs directory to view the profiles of surgeons who practice in the area. Some of these surgeons also offer other forms of laser eye surgery, such as PRK, Epi-LASIK or LASEK. These procedures can be an alternative for those patients who do not qualify for LASIK eye surgery.
Palm Desert and Palm Springs Areas
It is not unusual for patients to visit Palm Springs or Palm Desert to have refractive surgery. These cities are located about 90 miles east of Los Angeles on Interstate 10. It is one of the fasting growing areas in the country and boasts a number of country clubs with excellent golf courses. This area is home to a portion of the San Adreas Fault, which runs the full length of the valley. The area originally became a popular destination in the 1960s when movie stars and other celebrities began visiting Palm Springs as a winter get-a-way. Many of the street names are in honor of these famous movie stars and entertainers such as Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra. Temperatures during the winter months are typically very mild and allow virtually any outdoor activity, including swimming, tennis, golf and hiking. Visit the Palm Springs Visitors Bureau to learn more about the area.
