Before starting LASIK, the ophthalmologists utilize wavefront technology to diagnose a patient's individual refractive errors. With this state-of-the-art technology, eye surgeons at The LASIK Vision Institute™ can pick up on higher order aberrations (i.e., almost imperceptible vision problems). Utilizing this data, the eye surgeons then adjust the excimer laser that will be used to modify the patient's corneas during the LASIK procedure.
To start LASIK, the laser eye surgeons use a surgical blade, called a microkeratome, to make a miniscule flap in the cornea. By carefully lifting the flap, the surgeons can access the corneal tissue beneath. They next re-sculpt the underlying tissue with the calibrated excimer laser, correcting the refractive error that is causing nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. Once the eye surgeons are satisfied with the newly shaped cornea, they gently replace the corneal flap in its initial position. The corneal flap will re-bond to the eye naturally without the need for sutures.
In general, LASIK St. Louis clients do not feel any pain during the LASIK procedure. Moreover, 98 percent of patients who undergo LASIK vision correction with VISX technology attain at least 20/20 vision a year following surgery. After the procedure, LASIK patients may notice that they do not need to use prescription glasses or contact lenses to see well.
