Prior to beginning LASIK, the laser eye surgeons at The LASIK Vision Institute™ utilize the wavefront technology to diagnose patients' unique refractive errors. This sophisticated technology allows them to diagnose the most subtle of vision problems, usually referred to as "higher order aberrations." The surgeons then use this information to calibrate the excimer laser that they will use to reshape the patient's corneas during LASIK surgery.
To begin LASIK, the surgeons employ a microkeratome (i.e., a surgical blade) to create a tiny flap in the cornea, which they then gently lift to access the underlying tissue. Using the excimer laser, the eye surgeons next reshape the patient's corneal tissue to correct the refractive error that is causing the patient's farsightedness, nearsightedness and/or astigmatism. Once The LASIK Vision Institute™ eye surgeons are happy with the new shape of the cornea, they carefully put the corneal flap back in its original place, where it naturally re-bonds to the eye.
Patients undergoing LASIK in Baltimore do not typically experience any pain during the surgical procedure. Also, 98 percent of The LASIK Vision Institute™'s patients who receive LASIK using VISX technology achieve 20/20 vision or better one year after the procedure. In addition, many patients find that they no longer need to rely on prescription lenses and that prior problems with halos or glare are nearly eliminated.
