Voted America's best doctors 2007-2008

Laser and Corneal Surgery Associates voted among America's best doctors 2007-2008.

The corneal surgeons, Mark G. Speaker, MD, PhD, and Jodi L. Abramson, MD, of Laser and Corneal Surgery Associates, are among the most experienced and widely respected refractive surgeons in the country. These surgeons pioneered laser vision correction in the tri-state region and have provided many firsts for New Yorkers.

Dr. Speaker is a recognized leader in the development of laser vision correction. In the early 1990s, as Director of the Cornea Service at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, while many eye surgeons focused on the use of a surgical blade to change the shape of the cornea (i.e. radial keratotomy), he studied the use of lasers to correct vision. He participated in the clinical trials with the Chiron, VISX, Lasersight, and Alcon excimer lasers that led to FDA approval of laser vision correction in the United States, and played a key role in the development of Intralase "bladeless" refractive surgery. He was one of the first surgeons in this region to incorporate the Oculus Pentacam imaging technology for keratoconus screening, increasing the predictability and safety of LASIK surgery. Dr. Speaker is world renowned for developing new techniques to reduce and eliminate eye infections during surgery, thus greatly enhancing surgical safety. He is a coveted speaker who lectures to other eye surgeons about his advancements in laser eye surgery in both the United States and abroad. Dr. Speaker has been recognized as one of the best refractive surgeons in the county by "Americas Best Doctors" directory, New York Magazine and Castle and Connoly.

Dr. Jodi Abramson was one of the first doctors in the New York City area to become involved in laser vision correction after the FDA approved it in 1995. She is a highly experienced surgeon who has performed more than 10,000 LASIK procedures. She is recognized as an expert in refractive surgery and has been featured in numerous consumer media, including the New York Times, Woman's World Magazine and Rx Remedy Magazine. She lectures extensively about advancements in vision correction surgery. Dr. Abramson also performs LASIK surgery at her office in Westchester (www.lasikwestchester.com).

Drs. Speaker and Abramson are both fellowship-trained corneal surgeons whose skilled hands have been sought by many notable patients for the treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Their patients include many leaders from the business community, well-known celebrities, surgeons, and others with vision intensive occupations, such as bankers, lawyers, graphic artists, actors, policemen, firemen, professional athletes, and musicians. They bring their comprehensive training and experience, along with the most advanced laser vision correction technology, to the care of each patient. Unlike many other practices in the tri-state region, they do not rely on paid endorsements from celebrities or massive consumer advertising. They are dedicated to providing the highest level of safety and the best visual outcomes.

More About Laser and Corneal Surgery Associates

Each patient is meticulously examined to determine his or her candidacy for LASIK surgery. The surgeons will recommend one of two different wavefront-guided excimer laser systems to use for surgery. These systems provide a highly accurate measure of the corneal shape and create a customized laser treatment to correct the unique requirements of each eye. The Intralase "All Laser LASIK" or "Bladeless LASIK" technology is also available as an alternative to the microkeratome. In addition to laser vision correction, the newest technology IOLs (intraocular lenses) are available, including the Verisyse and Visian lenses for those highly myopic patients who do not qualify for LASIK, and the new multi-focal IOLs that provide simultaneous correction of reading and distance vision. Although the surgeons are on the cutting edge of new advancements in eyecare, they are conservative in their approach to laser vision correction. After a comprehensive screening and evaluation, a large percentage of patients are recommended not to undergo the LASIK procedure.
