Dr. Katzen strives to stay on the leading edge of advancements in vision correction surgery and is one of only 20 surgeons selected to participate in FDA clinical trails where new refractive surgery techniques and technologies are developed and refined. His center was the first in South Florida dedicated to laser vision correction and the first physician-owned center to permanently incorporate the "All Laser LASIK" or "Blade Free" surgical technique for laser vision correction (known as Intralase). He is a coveted speaker who lectures to other doctors — both in the United States and Internationally — about advancements in vision correction surgery. He also serves as an instructor at the primary eye surgery courses offered by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Katzen feels strongly about the life-changing benefits of vision correction surgery and has had LASIK performed on his own eyes. He volunteers his time to project ORBIS, a flying eye surgery hospital where vision correction surgery is performed on underprivileged patients around the world. He brings his extensive background, experience, the most advanced laser technology, and his unique perspective on LASIK surgery to the care of each patient.

More About Katzen Eye Center

Each patient is meticulously examined at the Katzen Eye Center to determine the best option for refractive surgery. For LASIK surgery, the VISX Star 4 Custom laser system is used. This wavefront-guided laser system provides a highly accurate measure of the cornea curvature and creates an individualized laser beam to correct each eye. To create the corneal flap, Dr. Katzen offers the Intralase technique, or "All Laser LASIK." In addition to LASIK surgery, CK surgery (conductive keratoplasty for the correction of nearsightedness) and PRK are available. The newest technology IOLs (intraocular lenses) are offered by Dr. Katzen, including the Verisyse, for those highly myopic patients who do not qualify for LASIK, and the Crystalens, ReSTOR Lens, and ReZoom Lens, which simultaneously correct for reading and distance vision. The newly approved Visian ICL or implantable contact lens, is available.

Real LASIK Stories

Jessica Cecere, CEO, talks about "feeling relieved."

"I had been looking for about 18 months. I interviewed five different places, talked to some different people, and when I finally decided to come here, I just felt so comfortable. I just knew right away.

I hated wearing my glasses! I'm really glad that I made my decision to have this done. I feel really good about it, and I feel like a big relief is off my shoulders. I didn't feel anything during the procedure.

Dr. Katzen, you're amazing. This is the most wonderful thing that's ever happened to me, and next to the birth of my child and my wedding day, this is the happiest day of my life."

Bob Impaglia, P.G.A. golf pro, talks about "improving my golf in 45 seconds."

"The first thing my friends say when they see me without glasses is that my contacts must be doing very well. I tell them that I don't wear contacts or glasses anymore. I can see without them, because I had LASIK. They look at my eyes and are amazed!

In fact, in one word it was MAGIC.

The actual surgery took 45 seconds. I improved my golf in 45 seconds. I couldn't be happier. The morning after the procedure I woke up and could see. I went from seeing the big E on the eye chart to seeing the smallest line. It was the most incredible thing in the world. This is by far one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

The whole office staff was congenial, very cooperative and made me feel at ease at all times."

John McKeeman, engineer, talks about "Dr. Katzen's availability."

"I spent approximately two years studying the procedure itself, and then spent another year interviewing nine different eye doctors and eye clinics. Being an engineer, I spent a lot of time analyzing any situation that was to involve my health. Dr. Katzen had done the greatest number of LASIK surgeries at the time of my interview. He was the only doctor I talked to who statistically told me what my vision would be after LASIK and the probability of seeing 20/20 after the surgery.

I felt comfortable by the fact that Dr. Katzen lives as a permanent resident in the community and doesn't travel from outside the county or state to perform LASIK.

Knowing that Dr. Katzen was always available for my followup care after the LASIK procedure was vitally important to me."

Dr. Rebecca Hill, optometrist, talks about "making the decision."

"I had worn contact lenses for many years, but they always irritated my eyes on a daily basis. The LASIK procedure is by far the best refractive procedure I have ever seen.

I observed many other surgeons perform the LASIK procedure. Dr. Katzen earned my confidence and impressed me with his expertise and experience. It wouldn't be normal if you weren't nervous, because it's a surgical procedure. But once I got to the office I was very comfortable. The staff was very good at making me feel confident in their professionalism. I had no question as to Dr. Katzen's ability to make sure that the best results possible were obtained.

It really has been a great change in my life. I can see well and have no irritations. I don't have to think about my eyes anymore."

Barbara Smith, teacher at the Alexander Dreyfoos Jr. School of the Arts, talks about "feeling comfortable."

"I wore contact lenses and glasses for 27 years. I wasn't seeing well, and I was uncomfortable, tired, and my activities were restricted.

I decided to have LASIK performed after doing much research. I went to several doctors and did my homework. One reason I chose Dr. Katzen was because I like his staff. They were very professional and explained all the information in a kind, relaxed manner.

After a year's anxiety, I felt comfortable. I went with my gut instinct.

LASIK has been the most incredible thing that's happened in my life. I can go and do whatever I want to without discomfort or being tired. I see better now than I did wearing contacts or glasses. LASIK far exceeded my expectations. It is an incredible experience."

Dr. Joel Hersch, optometrist, talks about "the LASIK procedure."

"As an optometrist, I value my own vision and the vision of all my patients. After observing Dr. Katzen perform the LASIK procedure and seeing the great results my patients experienced, I decided to have it done on myself. I was amazed at how easy it was, how there was no pain during the procedure, and how I could even start to see as soon as they moved the laser away from me.

Visual recovery was pretty rapid. The very next day I was driving on the interstate by myself without glasses and was back to work two days after I had the procedure.

I'm pretty active in sports. I play a lot of tennis, swim, and jog. Now I have a lot more freedom to do what I like to do.

Now that I have had the LASIK procedure myself, I recommend it to all my patients. The results have been so good for me, and it was such an easy procedure to go through, that it would be remiss for me not to tell my patients that they can have this done."
