In order to produce the best LASIK results, Dr. Espaillat utilizes the state-of-the-art wavefront-guided mapping system to take three-dimensional measurements of the eye prior to surgery. These measurements allow the surgeon to better tailor each LASIK vision correction treatment to the patient. As a result, the technique is often referred to as "Custom LASIK."

During the procedure, Dr. Espaillat uses the 3-D map to calibrate an advanced excimer laser that will later be used to reshape the cornea of the eye. Next, he creates a small flap in the cornea using the IntraLase laser and uses the excimer laser to correct corneal flaws. He then returns the flap to its original position, where it acts as a bandage that protects the cornea and aids the healing process. By using the IntraLase system, Dr. Espaillat is able to perform a completely blade-free laser vision correction surgery. Following surgery, most patients report clearer vision and less or no dependence on traditional eyewear.
