Epstein, MD, is a well-respected vision correction expert and board-certified ophthalmologist who has been serving patients throughout the Chicagoland area, as well as other areas of the U.S. and throughout the world, since 1980. Dr. Epstein was the first surgeon in the Midwest and one of the first in the United States to perform LASIK surgery. He holds several patents, including one for an ophthalmic instrument designed to increase the safety and accuracy of LASIK and other laser vision correction procedures. Dr. Epstein also co-developed a multifocal LASIK procedure to free people from reading glasses and bifocals. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Refractive Surgery, the author of three influential books and is on the editorial advisory board of Review of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Epstein is committed to optimizing each patient's visual outcome.

Dr. Epstein serves as Medical Director and Chief Surgeon at the Mercy Center for Corrective Eye Surgery, where he personally selects and trains each staff member to ensure quality patient care. To determine the best course of action for vision correction, each patient at the Mercy Center for Corrective Eye Surgery undergoes a comprehensive examination prior to surgery. Dr. Epstein utilizes the latest custom wavefront technology the VISX STAR S4 excimer laser system when performing LASIK. This state-of-the-art system takes extremely precise measurements of the cornea's curvature, producing a unique map which is then used to program the excimer. When combined with Dr. Epstein's skill and experience, the STAR S4 provides for some of the safest and most precise LASIK outcomes.
Dr. Epstein also offers the following treatments:
- Implantable contact lenses, or ICLs (for patients who are not good candidates for LASIK)
- Advanced cataract surgery with Crystalens (an intraocular lens that corrects for both distance and near vision)
In addition, Dr. Epstein specializes in "PresbyLASIK," also called multifocal LASIK. This revolutionary procedure meticulously reshapes the surface of the cornea to improve near, intermediate and distance vision. Unlike traditional LASIK, which corrects for either near or distance vision, PresbyLASIK helps patients with presbyopia see objects at all distances. Many patients no longer need bifocal eye glasses or contact lenses following this treatment.

"Hi, I live in Antioch, Illinois, and I had glasses for 30 years until I had LASIK surgery with Dr. Epstein. My husband had the surgery with Dr. Epstein before I decided to do it. It is the best thing I have ever done! I now wake up and see my kids and can go swimming with them without getting splashed and getting spots on my glasses. I recommend LASIK to everybody!"
"I work in the Woodstock area and I have been wanting to have LASIK for 15 years. I learned about Dr. Epstein from several friends and 1-800-I-CAN-SEE. I decided to have the surgery right before I turned 50. I am about to turn 52 and I'm so pleased with the surgery. I came in and had both eyes done, and that day I could see perfectly. The next day I came in for a check-up and all was great. Dr. Epstein called me later that night to make sure everything was fine, and it was. I am pleased that I had LASIK. I no longer reach over to shut off the alarm clock and look for my glasses. What an amazing feeling!"
"I am from Twin Lakes, Wisconsin. I struggled with glasses and contacts for a long time before I decided to have LASIK with Dr. Epstein. I now take for granted how good I feel and how easy everything is. I truly appreciate Dr. Epstein and the LASIK he performed."
"I am from Chicago. I had LASIK with Dr. Epstein around three years ago. I had glasses since I was in about fifth grade. The LASIK procedure was amazing and life-changing. Being able to reach over to the night stand and without having to reach for my glasses is great. I wish I had LASIK sooner!"
