David A. Bernitsky, MD

David Bernitsky, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in vision correction surgery. He has focused his medical career on refractive surgery since 1985 and is considered a pioneer in the Albuquerque area. Dr. Bernitsky offers a comprehensive refractive surgery practice and has extensive expertise in the subtleties and nuances of all types of vision correction procedures. Refractive procedures include blade-free Intralase with custom wavefront LASIK, the ICL implantable contact lens, Crystalens, ReZoom and ReSTOR IOLs, PRK, and AK.

LASIK Surgery

Dr. Bernitsky has both Zyoptix and the VISX S4 with Irisi recognition wavefront guided excimer laser system for custom LASIK. These systems provide a highly accurate measure of the corneal curvature so that an individualized custom laser profile is used to reshape the cornea. To create the "corneal flap," Dr. Bernitsky offers the blade-free IntraLASE procedure. The combination of the best technology and Dr. Bernitsky's experience provide for excellent LASIK outcomes.

Staar Visian ICL- Implantable Contact Lens

Dr. Bernitsky is the first and only New Mexico Surgeon certified to place the only reversible vision correction option- the ICL. It is particularly well-suited to people who aren't good Lasik cadidates- those with very high corrections (up to a -20), people with thin corneas, irregular corneas, dry eye, or those who simply prefer a reversible procedure. Dr. Bernitsky was recently chosen by Staar Surgical to receive the designation of a Staar Vision Center of Excellence for his commitment to excellence in surgical vision correction.

ReSTOR, ReZoom and Crystalens

Dr. Bernitsky is the only surgeon in New Mexico certified to place all three of the approved presbyopia correcting lenses - the ReSTOR, ReZoom and Crystalens IOL's. They replace the natural lens and simultaneously corrects for distance, intermediate and reading vision. These lens implants are designed specifically for correcting those patients more than 45 years old who want to decrease or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts, bifocals, trifocals and progressives.

Dr. Bernitsky's Background

Dr. David Bernitsky is a New Mexico native who obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of New Mexico. He completed medical school at the University of Oklahoma, School of Medicine, and performed his residency in ophthalmology at the Dean-McGee Eye Institute. Dr. Bernitsky then completed specific fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery at the world-renowned eye care facility, Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Before returning to New Mexico, Dr. Bernitsky served on the faculty of Johns Hopkins where he participated in training upcoming ophthalmologists on the newest advances in vision correction surgery. He is an active member of the major medical and ophthalmology organizations.
