More About Laser Eye Surgery at Northern California Laser Center

Dr. Ashrafzadeh uses the IntraLase in LASIK vision correction.

Dr. Ash is a highly experienced surgeon who received his specialty training in refractive surgery at the prestigious Tufts University in Boston. For LASIK surgery, Dr. Ash uses the VISX CustomVue wavefront-guided laser system. This advanced laser technology provides a highly accurate measurement of the cornea's curvature and creates an individualized map of the eye that is later used to correct patient's vision. To create the corneal flap, Dr. Ash offers the "all-laser LASIK" or "blade-free LASIK" system known as IntraLase. This laser system uses a laser instead of a bladed instrument (microkeratome) to create the corneal flap. IntraLase has advanced the safety levels of LASIK surgery to an entirely new level. The results of a LASIK study in Top Gun naval pilots clearly show the superiority of the IntraLase method over traditional LASIK. At the Northern California Laser Center, Dr. Ash offers the CustomVue LASIK with IntraLase, the same procedure performed at the naval LASIK surgery centers for Top Gun pilots.

IntraLase – "all-laser LASIK" or "blade-free LASIK" in the Sacramento area

The IntraLase method has greatly enhanced the accuracy of laser vision correction surgery. By creating a more precise flap, surgeons are able to deliver better surgical outcomes. One of the problems associated with using the traditional bladed microkeratome is the wrinkles in the corneal flap, which can reduce the quality of vision after LASIK. The IntraLase creates a smooth 70-degree flap edge that acts as a natural bandage for the eye. Once the LASIK eye surgery is complete, the flap is placed back into its original position. The wrinkle and cell growth under the edge of the flap have been lessened, paving the way for rewarding vision correction results.

During the iLASIK procedure, Dr. Ash utilizes the sophisticated IntraLase femtosecond laser to create a flap in the cornea, and the advanced VISX Star S4 platform to create a detailed map of the eye. This combination of state-of-the-art technologies consistently yields remarkable outcomes. Due to the procedure's high safety record, iLASIK has been approved for U.S. Navy Top Guns, U.S. Air Force pilots and NASA astronauts.

Cataract Surgery and Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) in the Sacramento area

In addition to refractive laser eye surgery, Dr. Ash performs cataract surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Ash removes clouded lenses and replaces them with high quality intraocular lens implants (IOLs) Dr. Ash also performs refractive lens exchange (RLE) to enhance the vision of patients who are not good candidates for LASIK. With his skilled hands and extensive knowledge, Dr. Ash has helped numerous patients achieve clearer vision and reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

In addition, Dr. Ash's patients who are referred from optometrists and medical practitioners can undergo foreign body injury treatment, as well as receive consultations regarding eye diseases, infection, inflammation of the eyes, glaucoma management and evaluations.

Questions regarding eye conditions, surgical procedures or billing issues may be answered by any of the staff or doctors at Turlock Eye Physicians during the initial consultation.

More About Amin Ashrafzadeh, MD

Amin Ashrafzadeh, MD, earned his Doctorate of Medicine degree as a graduate of an early medical school admission program at the Boston University School of Medicine. Following medical school, Dr. Ashrafzadeh participated in a select internship program at Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center in Boston. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Boston University, prior to serving a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at the combined Tufts University/Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston program.

Dr. Ash is a Fellowship-Trained Cornea and Refractive Surgeon, an accomplishment that requires an internship and three years of ophthalmology residency. After these three years, an ophthalmologist becomes board eligible and must pass all of the required exams to become board certified. Many ophthalmologists at this point start performing LASIK with little to no previous experience at all.

Dr. Ash spent an entire extra year studying with six world-renowned cornea specialists, learning almost everything about the cornea, the tissue that actually is operated on in LASIK surgery. He studied cornea surgeries, including LASIK and corneal transplant surgeries, as well as LASIK complications and their management in many patients who came for treatment of their problems. Dr. Ash's research has been published in Ophthalmology, the official publication of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Ashrafzadeh is a highly respected member of the refractive surgery community who has helped many LASIK Sacramento patients achieve their vision correction goals. He is affiliated with several professional medical societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the California Medical Association. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Davis. He is fluent in both Farsi and Spanish.
