David A. Wallace, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in LASIK, PRK, and lens-based methods of vision correction, including cataract surgery, intraocular lens implantation and Visian ICLs. A graduate of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, he completed his internship at the University of California, Los Angeles, and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Southern California Medical Center's Doheny Eye Foundation. Dr. Wallace has been in private practice since 1983, and has performed more than 15,000 LASIK treatments and more than 10,000 lens implant procedures.
Dr. Wallace was named by Los Angeles Magazine as one of "LA's Best Doctors," and has been quoted in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Business Week magazine. He has authored numerous scientific papers in professional journals and several articles about laser eye care in the lay press, including LASIK For Pilots in the October 2000 issue of Plane & Pilot magazine.
Dr. Wallace is a firm believer and advocate for public accountability of professionals, including doctors and surgeons. He has helped implement surgical outcome tracking and reporting systems within his private practice and for other LASIK providers to both monitor and improve results for recipients of laser care, and to provide the public with accurate statistics about safety, efficacy, stability and accuracy of vision correction care.
Medicine is at its core service profession, not unlike the hotel and restaurant business, yet the consumer of medical care has no tools to help guide medical care decisions like a Michelin hotel guide, Zagat restaurant survey, or the statistical equivalent of a baseball player's batting average. – Dr. Wallace

Dr. Wallace specializes in "no-stitch, no-patch, gentle-touch" cataract surgery, using the most advanced methods possible to replace the natural lens of the eye with an optically superior intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is now performed almost exclusively on an outpatient basis under eye drop anesthesia with an anesthesiologist present to give relaxing medicines by IV. Such treatment is quick, painless, and affords immediate results. Modern cataract and IOL care has become one of the safest, most reliable, most commonly performed procedures in the modern world. Historically, IOLs evolved first as single-focus lenses, which were able to correct vision at distance but not at near, and vice-versa. New styles of IOLs called "premium" lenses are able to afford clarity at distance and near, to optimize night vision, and even to correct for astigmatism. Dr. Wallace and his team spend a great deal of time educating and informing clients about the numerous IOL options available and personalizing recommendations appropriate to the visual needs of each client.
Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is almost identical to cataract surgery in that your eye's natural lens is replaced with an artificial one. This procedure is often performed for patients older than 55 years who desire vision correction care but do not yet have visually significant cataracts. Because RLE removes the natural lens, there is no future possibility of developing a cataract.
In phakic lens implantation, an internal contact lens (ICL) is placed inside the eye, in front of the eye's natural lens. This mode of treatment is optimal for those with nearsighted prescriptions that are too strong to be properly corrected by LASIK. ICL is also appropriate for patients with less strong prescriptions, who may not be optimal candidates for laser vision care for other anatomic or functional reasons.
Dr. Wallace takes care to see that every patient completely understands all aspects of the procedure they will have. He and his team answer all questions, and make it a goal to ensure that patients are comfortable, informed, relaxed and able to achieve the best possible outcomes.
"My eyesight is nearly perfect. I am in my late 60s, and I can say that I can now see better than when I was a young man. It's frightening to undergo eye surgery, but you and your wonderful staff took my fears away and made it a great experience. I appreciate the post-op phone calls telling me that "everything went right." This is the first time in my life that a doctor called to reassure me that the operation was a success. You have some of the most up-to-date equipment I have ever seen. After all the testing, I know that my eyes are very healthy and the cataract operation by your capable hands was very successful. You and your staff are one of a kind. Thank you so much." Del

He continued his education with an internship at the University of California, Los Angeles, and an ophthalmology residency at the prestigious University of Southern California Medical Center’s Doheny Eye Foundation. Dr. Wallace has written several published medical articles and has served as a consultant to numerous ophthalmic companies.
Dr. Wallace is also recognized as an innovator in the field of high-tech medical instrumentation. He co-invented and developed three computer-based diagnostic instruments now used by eye-care professionals worldwide. The instruments are known as the Tono-Pen Tonometer, which measures eye pressure, important in diagnosis and management of glaucoma, as well as the Pach-Pen Pachymeter, which measures corneal thickness, critical in many refractive surgery procedures and in monitoring certain corneal disease states. In addition, he created the Bio-Pen A-scan, which ultrasonically measures internal dimensions of the eye to help calculate lens implant strength before cataract surgery. He holds several patents pertaining to microelectronic computerized instruments, and founded Oculab Inc. to manufacture these products. They were recognized by the Industrial Designers Society of America and received the Industrial Design Excellence Award. The Tono-Pen tonometer has since been used in experiments aboard NASA's Space Shuttle, and had a cameo appearance in an episode of NBC TV's "ER". Dr. Wallace remains active in research and development of products for the eye care profession.
Dr. Wallace has provided consulting and teaching services for many ophthalmic companies including Chiron Vision, IOLAB, Medtronic/Solan Ophthalmic, Mentor O&O, Pharmacia, Synemed, Bio-Rad Ophthalmic, and Carl Zeiss.
