Dr. Updegraff performs the sophisticated "no-stitch, no-patch" cataract surgery with advanced intraocular lens implants (IOLs). During the procedure he creates a small, self-sealing incision the smallest incision available in the world on the surface of the eye. He then uses an ultrasound device to break up and remove the cataract (clouded crystalline lens), a process called phacoemulsification. The eye's natural lens is then replaced with an IOL, which remains in the eye permanently for clear postoperative vision. Premium IOLs are artificial implants that allow patients to restore their vision at multiple distances after the removal of the cataract. Dr. Updegraff offers several premium IOLs, including multifocal lenses. As a pioneer in the field of vision correction, Dr. Updegraff is also involved in the development of laser cataract surgery.
Stephen Updegraff, MD, FACS, obtained his undergraduate degree from Eckerd College and his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine. He completed his transitional internship at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine Charity Hospital in New Orleans and his ophthalmology residency at the Louisiana State University Eye Center. He then received advanced fellowship training in cornea, refractive and laser surgery at the Hermann Eye Center at the University of Texas-Houston.
