As people age, they can develop a clouding of the eye’s lens which blurs vision and makes tasks such as reading or driving difficult. This condition is called a cataract and should be surgically treated for improvement in vision. Cataract surgeons in Spokane remove the clouded lens and replace it for clearer, sharper vision. Cataract surgery is an extremely common and safe procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis. It typically takes about 10 minutes per eye. A technique called phacoemulsification is usually employed, in which ultrasonic energy breaks up the cataract before it is suctioned from the eye.
After the clouded lens has been removed, it is replaced with an intraocular lens implant (IOL). There are several types of IOLs, each with different advantages. A Spokane cataract surgeon can advise which IOL is best suited for your needs. One type of IOL is an accommodating lens, such as Crystalens, which shifts position as the eye muscles move to improve vision at multiple distances. Crystalens is also an example of a "premium" IOL that is designed for presbyopia correction. Presbyopia is age-related visual deterioration due to a thickening of the lens and loss of elasticity in the muscles of the eye; certain IOLs have the ability to treat eyes afflicted by both cataracts and presbyopia.
Other types of intraocular lenses include:
After a cataract surgery patient recovers from the procedure and adjusts to the IOL, he or she may wish to visit one of Spokane’s attractions with their newly restored vision. Spokane is an entertainment hotspot; many visitors enjoy the casinos, local sporting events and outdoor activities. From whitewater rafting to riding the world’s largest wooden roller coaster to tasting at a local winery, there is always plenty to do and see in Spokane. Visit Riverfront Park, take a self-guided walking tour of historic downtown or hike Centennial Trail – no matter what is on the itinerary, cataract surgery Spokane patients will discover they can do it all with clear and crisp vision.
If you’re experiencing blurry vision that you think may be caused by cataracts, contact a cataract surgeon in Spokane for a one-on-one consultation. After a general eye examination, the cataract surgeon may diagnose you with cataracts and explain your treatment options. Or, he or she may suggest you see a general ophthalmologist who can diagnose and treat other common vision conditions such as glaucoma, ocular migraines and diabetic retinopathy.
