Mark T. Shapiro, MD, FAAO, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and the founder of Shapiro Eye Care in Greensboro, North Carolina. Shapiro Eye Care offers comprehensive vision correction services, including cataract surgery with the placement of intraocular lenses (IOLs). Dr. Shapiro is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. His extensive experience and state-of-the-art technology allow him to treat even the most complex cataract cases. Numerous patients now see clearly thanks to the care of Dr. Shapiro and his staff.
Dr. Shapiro begins cataract surgery by making a miniscule incision in the eye. Through this incision, he uses an advanced laser technique to break up the cataract-diseased lens and aspirate it from the eye. The lens is then replaced with an IOL designed to improve the patient's vision without glasses or contact lenses. The IOL is usually inserted through the same incision used to remove the natural lens. Once it has been placed, the IOL unfolds into its correct position. The incision heals naturally and patients are ready to begin their regular activities within 24 hours.
Dr. Shapiro offers a variety of IOLs, including monofocal, multifocal and astigmatism-correcting lenses that are selected based on the needs of the individual patient. Monofocal lenses provide improvement to vision at one distance. However, there is now the option of a revolutionary multifocal lens—the RESTOR—that improves vision for a range of distances, from up close to far away and everywhere in between. With this lens, you can see the whole picture clearly, usually without any glasses. Astigmatism-correcting lenses, like the AcrySof Toric lens, make it possible to significantly improve distance vision and correct astigmatism at the same time.Email the Surgeon
Cataract surgery is usually a relatively painless experience for the patient; anesthetizing eye drops are administered prior to treatment to eliminate the chance of discomfort. The entire procedure lasts 20-30 minutes and takes place in an accredited surgical facility. Most patients adjust to their new IOL within just a few days of surgery.
In addition to cataract surgery, Shapiro Eye Care offers LASIK, all-laser LASIK, PRK, clear lens exchange and monovision treatment as well as general eye care and treatment of common vision disorders and diseases.
