He was the first eye surgeon in Nebraska and one of only ten in the world to perform epikeratophakia and keratomileusis (the precursor to LASIK eye surgery) and was also one of the first surgeons in Nebraska to perform RK (radial keratotomy) in 1983. Dr. Kugler is a successful refractive surgeon who completed fellowship training under world-renowned eye surgeon Dr. Ming Wang. He is currently the Director of Refractive Surgery for the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He has also served as the study coordinator in FDA clinical trials, and serves as an international consultant for corneal topography scans. Drs. Schlichtemeier and Kugler strive to offer the most advanced technologies and highest quality of surgical care to their patients.
Drs. Schlichtemeier and Kugler specialize in "no-needle, no-stitch," refractive cataract surgery, an advanced technique that involves the implantation of intraocular lens implants (IOLs). The procedure is performed by creating a small, self-sealing incision in the eye, removing the eye's natural lens, that has become clouded by a cataract, and implanting an advanced technology IOL. Drs. Schlichtemeier and Kugler offer a wide range of artificial lens implants to serve the needs of different patients, including AcrySof ReSTOR and Toric lenses as well as Crystalens. Following surgery, most cataract surgery patients of Dr. Schlichtemeier and Dr. Kugler are able to enjoy clear vision at many distances, reducing their dependency on corrective eyewear.
