David J. Schanzlin, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who boasts more than 25 years' experience. Dr. Schanzlin is widely recognized as a leader in the field of eye surgery. He received the Barraquer Award from the International Society of Refractive Surgery, and served as the organization's president. He has been a leading developer of several advanced ophthalmologic technologies, including the excimer laser and Intacs corneal rings. Dr. Schanzlin is one of the few eye surgeons in the San Diego area to be selected to join the American Ophthalmological Society, a prestigious medical organization. In addition, he has been chosen by his peers as one of the "Best Doctors in America."  In recognition of his surgical expertise, Dr. Schanzlin was invited to lead the Shiley Eye Center team at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Schanzlin performs cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens implants (IOLs). He begins the procedure with a small incision in the eye and extracts the clouded lens. Then, he replaces the clouded lens with a premium IOL, such as Crystalens, AcrySof ReSTOR. The Crystalens IOL is an accommodating lens that improves the eye’s ability to change focus from near to distant objects, while the multifocal AcrySof ReSTOR IOL uses a different technology to improve near, intermediate and distance vision.

Dr. Schanzlin also performs several other eye surgery procedures, including LASIK, LASEK,  photorefractive keratectomy, radial keratotomy and astigmatic keratotomy.

David J. Schanzlin, MD, completed a medical degree and ophthalmology residency at the University of Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident. He then performed a cornea and external disease fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Schanzlin served as an ophthalmology professor and chairman for the Department of Ophthalmology at St. Louis University, and as an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Southern California. Currently, Dr. Schanzlin is an ophthalmology professor at the University of California, San Diego. He has written numerous published journal articles and book chapters about vision correction surgery. In addition, Dr. Schanzlin has lectured around the world, including Europe, South America and Asia.
