The Chicago cataracts surgeons of The Midwest Center for Sight offer an advanced cataract surgery technique that promotes maximum comfort, safety and a rapid recovery. The procedure involves extracting the eye's clouded lens through a small incision and replacing it with an intraocular lens (IOL). Patients can choose from a variety of IOLs, including AcrySof ReSTOR, AcrySof IQ Monofocal, AcrySof Toric (to correct for astigmatism), Crystalens and Visiogen Synchrony.

The Eye Surgeons of The Midwest Center for Sight

James Katz, MD, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin and earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Dr. Katz went on to complete his residency at the University of Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary, as well as a fellowship at the Casebeer International Eye Center and the University of Utah Moran Eye Center. As one of the first eye surgeons in the Midwest to perform LASIK, Dr. Katz has trained numerous other surgeons in LASIK both in the United States and abroad. He was the initial Chicago-area principle investigator for the Visiogen Synchrony Lens and was the first Chicago surgeon to implant the AcrySof Toric IOL for reduction of astigmatism. Dr. Katz remains an innovator for advanced technologies relating to refractive cataract surgery. The Midwest Center for Sight was the first ophthalmic practice in Illinois to utilize TrueVision 3D HD surgical visualization in its operating room. Dr. Katz is a recognized author and sought-after speaker whose charity work has been featured by media around the world. Currently, he is involved in the construction of eye care clinics in remote areas of Vietnam. He is also a renowned representative of the Illinois Association of Ophthalmology and serves as Medical Director of Golf Laser Vision. Dr. Katz is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.

Jeffrey Mono, MD, earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan. Dr. Mono completed his residency in ophthalmology at Georgetown University and completed a fellowship in oculoplastic surgery at the University of Toronto. He has been practicing for more than 20 years and now serves as Division Chairman of Ophthalmology at Lutheran General Hospital. Dr. Mono holds memberships with many professional organizations, including the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Chicago Ophthalmological Society.

Rakhi Patil, MD, earned her undergraduate degree with summa cum laude honors at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, and received her medical degree from Rush University Medical College in Chicago. She completed her residency at the University of Illinois, where she was selected as Chief Resident her final year. Dr. Patil also underwent fellowship training in the treatment of glaucoma. She is affiliated with a number of professional organizations, including the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Chicago Ophthalmological Society.

Richard Katz, MD, received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Missouri Medical Center. Dr. Katz has been practicing ophthalmology for more than 30 years and is versed in all areas of eye care. He is a Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a member of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society and an Ophthalmological Associate in Research to Prevent Blindness.

Marshall Hirshman, MD, is one of the founding members of The Midwest Center for Sight and has been practicing ophthalmology for more than 35 years. Dr. Hirshman earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois and received his medical degree from the University of Illinois Medical School. He completed his residency at the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and served as the Chief of Ophthalmology at Lutheran General Hospital for more than 22 years. Dr. Hirshman specializes in a variety of eye care services and procedures. He is a member of the Illinois Association of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
