Gus Stern, MD, is a fellowship-trained, board-certified ophthalmologist treating Waynesboro cataract surgery and refractive surgery patients. He has amassed a wide breadth of experience, having performed more than 5,000 cataract surgeries. Dr. Stern specializes in cataract surgery, refractive surgery including LASIK, cornea surgery and glaucoma treatment. After his ophthalmology residency, Dr. Stern completed a cornea fellowship. This is an additional and optional year of training during which surgeons operate on the most difficult and complex cataracts. Dr. Stern is one of the only eye surgeons in the Frederick/Waynesboro area to have completed a cornea fellowship. In addition, Dr. Stern regularly travels to third world countries and operates on the most difficult cataracts. The eye surgeon is highly sought after thanks to his caring demeanor and superior surgical skill.
At Maryland Vision Institute, Dr. Stern and his medical staff perform "all-laser, micro-incision" cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens implants (IOLs). He starts the procedure by creating a self-sealing incision in the eye, through which he removes the cataractous (cloudy) eye lens. To perform this step, Dr. Stern will either use phacoemulsification or laser energy to break up the cloudy lens before easily removing the pieces. He then inserts an IOL to replace the cataract-diseased lens, restoring clear vision following surgery.
Now, most steps of cataract surgery can be completed with a laser. Dr. Stern is always at the forefront of technology. Dr. Stern was one of the first surgeons in the country certified on the use of a femtosecond laser to remove cataracts. He is the only surgeon in the state of Maryland certified on both the AMO Catalys laser and Alcon's LenSx™ laser. He is the first and only surgeon in the Hagerstown region to offer laser-assisted cataract surgery. Dr. Stern is the most experienced laser-assisted cataract surgeon in the region and has been performing laser-assisted cataract surgery longer than any surgeon in Maryland.
Maryland Vision Institute offers a range of premium IOLs that can be inserted at the time of cataract surgery. They are the only eye care center in the region to offer the Crystalens. This is a lens that flexes while inside the eye to allow far and near vision. They also utilize multifocal lenses (Restor) which allow patients to see at different distances. Finally, they offer toric lenses to correct astigmatism.
Because cataract surgery is performed under topical anesthesia, it is completely painless. Dr. Stern's cataract patients who elect to have premium lenses achieve clearer vision at different distances after surgery. They are often able to forgo their daily dependence on prescription eyewear.
Aside from cataract surgery, Dr. Stern also offers blade-free LASIK, glaucoma treatment, treatment of corneal disease and other eye care services.

"My mother was reluctant to undergo cataract surgery even as her vision worsened.
A friend of mine suggested Maryland Vision Institute where she had undergone a Lasik procedure. I finally convinced my mother to let me take her there for an exam and consultation. The staff at Maryland Vision Institute could not have been more friendly and accommodating. My mother's fears quickly disappeared. After determining what needed to be done and patiently answering all of our questions we scheduled the surgery dates. Although mom was nervous, the first laser surgery went without a hitch. After two weeks she had had laser surgery on her other eye. Dr. Stern and his staff at the Maryland Vision Institute could not have been more professional and caring both during the surgeries and the follow-up exams. My mother's vision is vastly improved and her only regret is that she did not get this procedure done sooner. I would unequivocally recommend the Maryland Vision Institute to anyone with vision problems in the Maryland /Pennsylvania region." Bob N.
"My mother had excellent results with cataract surgery with Dr. Stern. She says that nothing could have been any better. She would recommend it very highly." Sarah M.
"This is THE place to go for eye care. Their office is immaculate and everyone was very friendly to me. I had an amazing experience undergoing LASIK here and I know a bunch of my family friends who had their cataract surgery done here with great results.
"I'm glad that we finally have some eye expertise in the Hagerstown area. I don't have to drive East anymore for my eye care, which is great for my car :-) I recommend this place to all of my family and friends." Jessica B.
