Gus Stern, MD, a board-certified ophthalmologist, treats patients seeking refractive and cataract surgery in Cumberland, Md. Dr. Stern has extensive ophthalmology expertise, having performed more than 5,000 cataract surgeries. He is well trained in a variety of vision correction procedures, and specializes in cataract, glaucoma, cornea and refractive surgery, including LASIK surgery. After his ophthalmology residency, Dr. Stern completed a cornea fellowship. This is an additional and optional year of training during which surgeons operate on the most difficult and complex cataracts. Dr. Stern is the only eye surgeon in the Cumberland area to have completed a cornea fellowship. In addition, Dr. Stern regularly travels to third world countries and operates on the most difficult cataracts. Dr. Stern provides his patients with excellent patient care and outstanding vision correction results.
Dr. Stern and the team members at Maryland Vision Institute provide "micro-incision" cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens implants (IOLs). Dr. Stern starts the surgical procedure by creating a self-sealing incision in the eye, through which he removes the cataract-diseased crystalline lens. In this step, Dr. Stern will either use phacoemulsification or laser energy to break up the cloudy lens before easily removing the pieces. He next inserts an IOL in place of the cataract-diseased lens to restore clear vision after surgery.
Now, most steps of cataract surgery can be completed with a laser. Dr. Stern is always at the forefront of technology. Dr. Stern was one of the first surgeons in the country certified on the use of a femtosecond laser to remove cataracts. He is the only surgeon in the state of Maryland certified on both the AMO Catalys laser and Alcon's LenSx™ laser. He is the first and only surgeon in the Hagerstown region to offer laser-assisted cataract surgery. Dr. Stern is the most experienced laser-assisted cataract surgeon in the region and has been performing laser-assisted cataract surgery longer than any surgeon in Maryland.
Maryland Vision Institute offers a range of premium IOLs that can be inserted at the time of cataract surgery. They are the only eye care center in the region to offer the Crystalens. This is a lens that flexes while inside the eye to allow far and near vision. They also utilize multifocal lenses (Restor) which allow patients to see at different distances. Finally, they offer toric lenses to correct astigmatism.
Cataract surgery is completely painless because it is performed under topical anesthesia. Dr. Stern's cataract patients who elect to have premium lenses achieve clearer vision at several distances after surgery. They are frequently able to relinquish their daily dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
Aside from cataract surgery, Dr. Stern also provides blade-free LASIK, corneal disease treatment, glaucoma treatment and general eye care services.

"My mother was reluctant to undergo cataract surgery even as her vision worsened.
A friend of mine suggested Maryland Vision Institute where she had undergone a Lasik procedure. I finally convinced my mother to let me take her there for an exam and consultation. The staff at Maryland Vision Institute could not have been more friendly and accommodating. My mother's fears quickly disappeared. After determining what needed to be done and patiently answering all of our questions we scheduled the surgery dates. Although mom was nervous, the first laser surgery went without a hitch. After two weeks she had had laser surgery on her other eye. Dr. Stern and his staff at the Maryland Vision Institute could not have been more professional and caring both during the surgeries and the follow-up exams. My mother's vision is vastly improved and her only regret is that she did not get this procedure done sooner. I would unequivocally recommend the Maryland Vision Institute to anyone with vision problems in the Maryland /Pennsylvania region." Bob N.
"My mother had excellent results with cataract surgery with Dr. Stern. She says that nothing could have been any better. She would recommend it very highly." Sarah M.
"This is THE place to go for eye care. Their office is immaculate and everyone was very friendly to me. I had an amazing experience undergoing LASIK here and I know a bunch of my family friends who had their cataract surgery done here with great results.
"I'm glad that we finally have some eye expertise in the Hagerstown area. I don't have to drive East anymore for my eye care, which is great for my car :-) I recommend this place to all of my family and friends." Jessica B.
