Cataracts cause a clouding of the natural lens in the eye. Over time, as the cataract becomes more dense, the patient becomes unable to see. The cause of cataracts is unknown, but it is thought to be related to the amount of UV (ultraviolet) radiation that enters the eye. Due to the high amount of sunshine in Honolulu and across other parts of Hawaii, including the islands of Oahu, Maui, and Kauai, cataracts can develop for many in the population.
Fortunately, cataracts are relatively easy to treat, thanks to the miracle of modern medical technology. The best cataract surgeons in Honolulu can perform eye surgery to correct cataracts in less than 30 minutes. The surgeon makes a small incision in the eye and then removes the natural lens using an ultrasound process called phacoemulsification. After the natural lens has been dissolved and sucked from the eye, the artificial lens or IOL (intraocular lens) is placed in the eye where the natural lens had been. If the incision is made properly, it is self-healing and no stitches are needed. Most cataract patients can return home the same day, within few hours of surgery.
Most cataract patients in Honolulu are older than 50 years of age and they have presbyopia, or the inability to focus on close objects, such as needed during reading. Premium IOLs, such as Crystalens, AcrySof ReSTOR, Tecnis and ReZoom, provide treatment for both cataracts and presbyopia. Crystalens is an accommodating IOL and works by moving in the eye slightly as the patient changes focus, just as in a young eye. The AcrySof ReSTOR, ReZoom and Tecnis lenses are multifocal IOLs and work in a similar fashion to bi-focal contact lenses or glasses. It is best to consult with a Honolulu cataract surgeon to determine if you are a candidate for cataract surgery and whether a premium IOL is best for you. If you live outside of Honolulu in other parts of Oahu, or on one of the other islands, such as Maui, Kauai or Molokai, then you can ask your eye doctor whether a top cataract surgeon has offices close to your home.
Many of the top cataract surgeons in Hawaii offer other services, such as LASIK eye surgery and cosmetic facial treatments, including Botox injections, Restylane injections or laser hair removal. When you visit the eye surgeon, be sure to ask about these other services.
