If you have been diagnosed with cataracts, then you have come to the right place. In addition to successfully treating cataracts, Dr. Green views cataract surgery as an opportunity to reduce or eliminate your dependence on eye glasses and contact lenses. After cataract surgery, you will finally have the freedom to select those attractive non-prescription sun glasses for golf, fishing or tennis. Cataract surgery can make your vision like it was when you were young, which can make you feel and act younger.
Cataracts cause your natural crystalline lens to become clouded and stiff, thus losing the ability to focus. Cataract surgery removes your clouded lens and replaces it with a clear, artificial lens through a microscopic incision.
Today's technology has provided ophthalmologists with several excellent artificial intraocular lenses – Crystalens®, Tecnis® Multifocal, ReSTOR®. Although not perfect, these lenses are much better than what you have when a cataract develops. Dr. Green has experience using each of these lenses. It is her goal to find the right lens for your particular visual needs.
Email the SurgeonDr. Green is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a fellowship-trained corneal specialist. Dr. Green is well known in the Texas Medical Center, where she has treated many of her colleagues for more than 20 years. Dr. Green has been named one of Consumers Research Council of America's "Top Ophthalmologists" and Texas Monthly's "Texas Super Doctors." Dr. Green strives to combine cutting-edge technology with old-fashioned caring. In addition she offers all the best options for those needing cataract surgery including Crystalens®, ReSTOR®, Tecnis® Multifocal and the AcrySof® Toric premium lenses. These premium lenses offer patients significantly reduced dependence on glasses; many do not need eye glasses or contact lenses at all following cataract surgery.
How long does it take?
The actual surgery time is about 20 minutes, but you will be at the facility for 1 to 2 hours.
Does it hurt?
No it does not hurt. You may feel pressure, but not pain. You will be given an IV sedative, so you may not be aware of anything. Many patients are surprised to learn that we are finished, because they were not aware that we had even started the procedure.
When can I drive and go back to work?
In most cases, you can drive the following day. Many patients return to work the day after surgery; others prefer to give themselves a break for 48 to 72 hours.
What about exercise?
You may exercise the day after surgery. Wait several days if the exercise is "jarring," such as jogging.
What about blood thinners?
Blood thinners do not need to be discontinued.
How do I know which lens to choose?
Based on your measurements, your personal preference profile, what you do most of the time and your discussion with the doctor; Dr. Green will make a recommendation of which lens or lenses are most likely to best fit your visual needs.
"I was not able to see far or near so my concern was, 'will I ever be able to see well? What can you do to help me?' Just a little help is what I came in to see Dr. Green about, and things turned out to be better than I ever expected. Not only did she help me to see far, which is like high definition, now I can see close and read and even see computers. A big issue at my age is to read and see the computer as well as see far. Dr. Green has made it possible for me to play tennis, to read, to function. I've been in real estate and must read the fine print in contracts. After my surgery, it has been incredible, there's not enough I can say. Dr. Green's calming attitude the confidence just made for a wonderful experience." Patty Thompson
"I decided the Crystalens was the best way to go, but I didn't want to trust my own judgment so I asked Dr. Green. I said, 'If you were doing this surgery on your eyes, what would you choose?' I didn't tell her I already had my mind made up and Dr. Green said, 'I would choose Crystalens in a heartbeat,' and I said, 'Let's go.' I haven't been sorry about it because the next day I could see much better than I have ever been able to see. Dr. Green did a great job. I keep a stack of her cards on my desk. I drive all over the freeways all week and night too and I just don't even think a thing about just getting in the car and going. I have complete confidence in the staff and would highly recommend anyone who needs something done to their eyes to come here because everyone that I've worked with and had worked on me has been excellent. I give them a 100 percent rating – everyone of them." Aubrey Little
