Dr. Michael Furlong is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship trained cataract surgeon with a specialization in small incision cataract, cataract surgery with advanced lenses and laser refractive surgeries. Dr. Furlong studied under world-renowned cataract and refractive surgery leader, Dr. Howard Gimbel and has taught ophthalmology techniques worldwide.

Dr. Furlong established Furlong Vision Correction in 1998 and merged practices with Dr. Stephen Turner in 2011. Dr. Turner opened Turner Eye Institute in 1976, providing complete ophthalmology services including vision correction, including cataract and LASIK surgeries. Together they have performed more than 20,000 small-incision cataract surgeries to date.

In recognition of his exceptional skills, Dr. Furlong has been named one of San Jose's "Top Docs" numerous times by his peers, as well as one of LaserVision Centers' "Top 5 Surgeons Nationwide," "Top 50 Practices" and "Top 50 Surgeons Nationwide." Dr. Furlong performs advanced small incision cataract surgery and also provides his patients with the option to choose advanced intraocular lens implants (IOLs), allowing patients to eliminate the need for glasses for most daily activities. Tecnis and ReSTOR lenses correct vision for both distance and near activities. Crystalens accommodating lenses help patients focus on objects at various distances and Toric lenses are used to correct astigmatism. During the procedure, Dr. Furlong makes a tiny incision in the eye to extract the clouded lens and implant an IOL.

In addition to cataract surgery, Dr. Furlong offers refractive lens exchange for patients with presbyopia who wish to correct near and distance vision again allowing patients to achieve clear vision while reducing their dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

More About Michael Furlong, MD

Dr. Furlong completed a Bachelor of Science degree at Stanford University and a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Hawaii, where he graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. He then performed an internal medicine and surgery internship at the University of Hawaii, an ophthalmology residency at the University of Utah Moran Eye Center and a refractive surgery fellowship at the Gimbel Eye Center in Calgary, Canada. Dr. Furlong has traveled to several countries to teach refractive surgery techniques to fellow ophthalmologists. In addition, he has written numerous published journal articles and book chapters about refractive surgery.
