Although 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts, this is one of the most curable causes of vision loss. New techniques developed over the past decade have made cataract surgery one of the most successful procedures available in terms of restoring your vision and ultimately your quality of life. One of the newest developments in cataract surgery is the use of a femtosecond laser to make incisions and break up the cataract. Dr. Frantz is the first surgeon in Southwest Florida to offer bladeless laser cataract surgery.
A cataract is the clouding of your eye's normally clear lens, blocking the passage of light needed for vision. During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, or IOL. At the Frantz Cataract Center, Dr. Frantz offers his patients the choice of a monofocal IOL (single vision), a Toric IOL for astigmatism, or a CustomLens Multifocal IOL, such as AcrySof ReSTOR.
Standard single vision lens implants do not have the ability to provide a full range of vision. Most people who have single vision lens implants have both eyes corrected for distance vision and wear reading glasses for near vision.
If you have astigmatism, a Toric IOL makes it possible to treat the cataract and correct the corneal astigmatism at the same time. If you have both a cataract and a corneal astigmatism, you will not regain high quality distance vision after cataract surgery unless the astigmatism is also corrected. The CustomLens implants offer the possibility of seeing well at all distances, without glasses or contact lenses.
"It's so exhilarating to see patients who have spent all of their lives with glasses come back for their postoperative visits and be thrilled and thankful that they don't need them anymore." — Dr. Frantz
Medicare and most private insurance companies have covered cataract surgery for years. Medicare and private insurance companies now allow beneficiaries to choose one of the CustomLens implants that allows the eye to focus on near and far objects, minimizing the need for corrective lenses. However, if you choose the CustomLens, you are responsible for payment of that portion of the charge for the lens and associated services that exceeds the charge for a conventional monofocal lens. As a service to his patients, Dr. Frantz offers a full range of payment plans to meet every financing need.Email the Surgeon
