Dr. Gary Fillmore

Serving patients seeking cataract surgery in Spokane, Washington and the surrounding area

Gary Fillmore, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist at Eye Consultants in Spokane, Washington. Eye Consultants offers complete eye care and a range of vision correction procedures, including cataract surgery. Dr. Fillmore, his associates and support staff members are superbly skilled and adhere to the highest standards of medical and surgical care. Patient comfort, safety and satisfaction are extremely important to all members of the team. To realize this mission, Eye Consultants stays closely attuned to the needs and goals of every patient who walks through the practice’s doors.

During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an implant, called an intraocular lens (IOL). To remove the lens, Dr. Fillmore typically uses a technique called phacoemulsification, in which he makes a small, self-healing incision in the eye and breaks the lens into pieces before removing it from the eye. (Some cases require the extracapsular extraction technique, which involves a larger incision.) The IOL is then placed through the same incision. It remains permanently in place and restores the patient’s ability to see clearly, often without the aid of eyeglasses. Dr. Fillmore may use a monofocal, multifocal or astigmatism-correcting IOL, depending on the individual patient’s needs and lifestyle.

Cataract surgery is usually a pain-free experience, thanks to the use of topical anesthesia, and often takes no more than 10 minutes per eye. Approximately 1.5 million Americans have cataract surgery annually, with a 95 percent success rate. The improvement in vision at multiple distances can have a profound impact on an individual’s quality of life.

In addition to cataract surgery and the placement of IOLs, Eye Consultants offers LASIK and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) to correct a range of refractive errors. Comprehensive medical and surgical treatment for common eye disorders like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration is also available.

What Do Patients Say About Dr. Fillmore?

Dr. Fillmore and his family

"It's still shocking to me that I wake up and can see! To me, that's just amazing because since the 3rd grade, I've always had some kind of lens to help me see. The fact that I can go to bed and wake up without having blurry vision is amazing! Eye Consultants has the financing plans that you can go with...it's well worth it! It's amazing...and a great experience. So I recommend it to anybody." —Meghan Frederick

"When I was a child, I'd look at the moon and it was blurry and I thought that was normal. The surgery itself was amazing because they're so professional. Coming out of surgery, I honestly started to cry because I could see...it was amazing! It was a great process...just awesome. I am truly happy. If you've got contacts right now, get rid of them and go to Eye Consultants." —Brian Shields

"I really appreciated how great the staff was. They were great at explaining exactly what would happen. All of the follow up has been fantastic. I appreciate this especially in the middle of the night. If I get called into work and have to run to a hospital really quick, now I don't have to put contacts into my already tired eyes which is never comfortable in the middle of the night. I just like being able to get up, get in the car and go. My night vision has been great and my vision in general has been amazing." —Dr. Sarah d'Hulst
