Thomas Falkenberg, MD, Steven J. Hudson, MD, and Christopher C. Shen, MD, are board-certified ophthalmologists who specialize in advanced cataract surgery. With more than 20 years of combined experience, these surgeons have created a center of excellence for vision correction surgery in the Fredericksburg region. This is why many patients with vision-intensive occupations, such as policemen, firefighters, teachers and many others, have chosen the skilled surgeons of SIEHT: A Falkenberg Eye & Laser Center to treat their cataracts. Dr. Falkenberg is board certified in both ophthalmology and internal medicine, and has extensive surgical experience in cataract, refractive, glaucoma, eyelid, and laser eye surgery. Dr. Hudson is board certified in ophthalmology with surgical experience in cataract, anterior segment surgery, ophthalmic plastic and eyelid surgery. Dr. Shen is a fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist and cataract surgeon who contributed to a chapter in The Glaucoma Book by John Samples and Paul Shacknow and serves as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Glaucoma.
Drs. Falkenberg, Hudson and Shen perform "no-needle, no-stitch, no-patch" cataract surgery, a technique that typically involves less pain and requires less recovery time than traditional cataract surgery. Prior to surgery, anesthetic eye drops are administered, which dilate the pupil and help eliminate any discomfort during the procedure. Then, the surgeon creates a self-sealing incision on the surface of the eye (cornea), through which he breaks up and removes the clouded lens. Next, a permanent intraocular lens (IOL), modeled after the eye's natural lens, is inserted and placed in position through the same incision.
Drs. Falkenberg, Hudson and Shen offer a number of the latest IOLs, including ReSTOR, Tecnis and Toric. ReSTOR and Tecnis are multifocal IOLs that restore both reading and distance vision, while the Toric IOL is a uniquely shaped lens designed to correct the vision of cataract patients who suffer from astigmatism.
