Robert Epstein, MD, FACS, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in refractive and cataract surgery. Dr. Epstein has performed more than 20,000 eye surgeries and was one of the first to perform "no-stitch" cataract surgery in the Chicago area. In addition, he has created several innovative eye surgery technologies that have increased patient safety. He is responsible for the U.S. introduction of the technique of presbyLASIK for the elimination of the need for glasses in people needing bifocals. The results of his work on presbyLASIK can be found in medical publications including the Journal of Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Epstein is a leading provider of advanced cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens implants (IOLs). He begins the procedure by creating a small incision in the eye. Then, he breaks up the clouded lens with an ultrasonic needle, a method known as phacoemulsification. After the clouded lens is extracted, he replaces it with an IOL. The accommodating Crystalens IOL flexes with the eye's muscle and helps patients change focus from near to distance objects, while the multifocal AcrySof ReSTOR and ReZoom IOLs can be used to correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness. With these advanced IOLs, many patients eliminate their dependence on eye glasses or contact lenses.
In addition to advanced cataract surgery Dr. Epstein is noted for his work in other areas. Dr. Epstein introduced and is a leading practitioner of the technique of CLEARS (corneal lens excimer assisted refractive surgery) for the elimination of the need for glasses and contact lenses in people beyond the range of LASIK. This technique provides a reversible method of vision correction that does not require surgery inside the eye.
Dr. Epstein also offers Visian implantable collamer lenses (ICLs) and Verisyse phakic IOLs for nearsighted patients who are not good candidates for LASIK. These lenses are placed over the natural lens to help patients achieve clear vision.
