S. Gregory Smith, MD, is a widely known ophthalmologist and leader in eye surgery. Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Smith has more than 23 years of experience and is the only Attending Surgeon at the famed Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. He has published numerous papers and several books, lectured around the world and holds over 20 patents, including one on an implant designed for glaucoma treatment. Dr. Smith is also the recipient of several prestigious awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Castroviejo Cornea Society and what is now known as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Smith and his team perform advanced laser cataract surgery when medically appropriate. Laser cataract surgery involves removing the clouded, cataract-diseased lens and replacing it with an artificial lens (called an intraocular lens implant or IOL). The entire procedure is performed with lasers, from the incision to breaking up the lens into tiny pieces for removal. Dr. Smith offers several types of leading edge IOLs, including multifocal, toric and Crystalens accommodating lenses.
Cataract surgery takes about 30 minutes and is performed under topical anesthesia. Dr. Smith and his staff offer the highest quality of care and cater to each patient's individual needs throughout the entire surgical experience and follow-up care. Patients generally notice a quick improvement in their vision and less of a need for daily eyewear.
In addition to performing cataract surgery, Dr. Smith is a renowned LASIK surgeon offering a range of refractive eye surgeries and eye care therapies. A full-service optical shop features stylish designer frames and more affordable options.
