Dr. Chu has been recognized for his cataract services.
Y. Ralph Chu, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist offering individuals in St. Paul and Minneapolis cataract surgery. He has more than 15 years of experiencing treating Twin Cities cataract surgery and LASIK patients. Minnesota Monthly voted him one of the "Best Doctors for Women" in 2013. Dr. Chu was also named the "Best LASIK Doctor" in the Sun-Current's Readers' Choice Awards. When Dr. Chu was 11 years old, he watched a television program about a man who saw his newborn child for the first time after undergoing vision correction treatment for blindness. At that moment, Dr. Chu knew that he would be an eye surgeon, so he could help others experience the gift of sight. As a highly-esteemed authority in ophthalmology, Dr. Chu is invited to lecture at national and international ophthalmic conferences, and has performed cataract surgery for an audience comprised of thousands of surgeons at the World Ophthalmology Congress in Hong Kong.
Dr. Chu performs leading-edge "micro-incision, no-stitch" laser cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens implants (IOLs). He starts the procedure by creating a self-sealing incision in the eye, through which he extracts the cataract-diseased lens. To facilitate removal of the cataractous lens, Dr. Chu performs a step called "phacoemulsification," which involves using ultrasound energy to fragment the lens before flushing or suctioning out the pieces. He replaces the cataractous lens with an IOL to restore clear vision after surgery. Chu Vision Institute offers a wide range of premium IOL options, including: Crystalens accommodating IOLs, which move with the eye muscles to provide clear sight at various distances; AcrySof ReStor and Tecnis multifocal lenses, which also allow patients to see well at multiple distances; and astigmatism-correcting AcrySof toric IOLs.
Cataract surgery is generally considered a painless procedure, thanks to topical anesthetic eye drops that are administered before the start of surgery. Patients who undergo cataract surgery under the care of Dr. Chu are able to achieve improved vision at several distances and, in certain cases, greatly reduce their reliance on daily eyewear.
In addition to cataract surgery, Chu Vision Institute offers LASIK and PRK vision correction treatments, phakic lens implants, treatment for glaucoma and dry eye and corneal transplantation.
