Cataracts are a disease that causes a clouding of the eye's lens. Over time the cloudiness can become so severe that the patient cannot see to perform everyday visual tasks. In order to diagnose a cataract, a Calgary eye doctor uses a device called a slit lamp. A slit lamp is like a microscope that the surgeon can use to inspect the lens. The patient places his or her chin in the chin rest and is asked to look straight ahead. The eye doctor moves the slit lamp light back and forth across the lens and looks for any clouding or haze in the lens. If a speck of haze or cloudiness is detected, then a cataract is diagnosed. In order to determine how much the cataract affects vision, the Calgary cataract surgeon may use a variety of vision function tests, such as contrast sensitivity or glare testing.
Cataract is a very common eye disease and can afflict virtually 100 percent of the population, at some time in their lives. Calgary, as the largest city in the province of Alberta, has a number of cataract patients each year. These patients may come from all around the area, including Chestermere, Cochrane, Aldrie and other towns. Calgary cataract surgeons can help these patients to eliminate the cataracts and restore their vision. This eye problem can be easily treated with surgery and the success rate of cataract surgery in Calgary approaches 99 percent. During the procedure, the natural cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens, called an IOL. Advanced IOLs can correct for near, distance and intermediate vision, such as the AcrySof ReSTOR, Crystalens and ReZoom lenses. In many cases, patients have better vision than they did before they developed cataracts.
Cataract surgeons in Calgary are ophthalmologists who are medical doctors. These surgeons have been through medical school and an ophthalmology residency. During residency, they study the many eye diseases that can affect patients, learn how to treat these eye diseases and they learn about cataract surgery. Since cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in Calgary and throughout Canada, these surgeons receive considerable training in this procedure.
