Domenic C. Izzo, Jr., MD, Francisco L. Tellez, MD, FACS, and Peter D. Calder, MD, are board-certified ophthalmologists who specialize in cataract and intraocular lens implant (IOL) surgery. Dr. Izzo has performed more than 15,000 cataract and intraocular lens implant procedures and was one of the first ophthalmologists in Berks County to perform the small-incision, "no stitch" cataract surgery. As members of the acclaimed Berks Eye Physicians & Surgeons practice, Drs. Izzo, Tellez and Calder use the highest quality surgical technologies and techniques to help patients eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. In addition, each surgeon holds advanced training in presbyopia-correcting lens implantation, laser vision correction (LASIK and PRK), glaucoma treatment and corneal refractive therapy. The Berks Eye Physicians & Surgeons team is dedicated to providing patients with comforting care and the best possible results. Drawing on their decades of experience, along with a dedicated and professional staff, Berks Eye Physicians & Surgeons are able to deliver state-of-the-art patient care in the area of laser eye surgery and cataract surgery with IOLs.
Drs. Izzo, Tellez and Calder begin cataract surgery by administering eye-numbing drops and applying eyelid holders to prevent blinking. Next, they make a small, "self-sealing" incision on the surface of the cornea and break up and remove the clouded lens through a process called phacoemulsification. The natural lens is then replaced with an artificial intraocular lens implant (IOL), which is customized for the patient. The IOL is selected based on the patient's unique vision goals and lifestyle. The most requested IOLs include AcrySof ReSTOR and ReZoom, which are multifocal lenses that restore both reading and distance vision. The surgeons also offer the Crystalens accommodating IOL, another lens that allows patients to focus on objects near and far. In addition, Drs. Izzo, Tellez and Calder offer the Toric IOL, which is a uniquely shaped lens specifically designed to treat cataract patients who also have astigmatism.
At Berks Eye Physicians & Surgeons, Drs. Izzo, Tellez and Calder also perform laser vision correction procedures, including LASIK and PRK. In contrast to cataract surgery, in which IOLs replace the eye's natural lens, LASIK and PRK use the excimer laser to reshape the cornea, precisely reducing dependency upon spectacles. Phakic IOLs are another option for patients seeking to eliminate glasses and contact lenses.
At Berks Eye Physicians & Surgeons, Drs. Izzo, Tellez and Calder provide personalized care for each cataract surgery patient. The patient is guided through his or her entire experience by the doctors and Berks Eye's staff of highly trained and skilled technicians.
Berks Eye Physicians & Surgeons' patients enjoy the comfort and convenience of having their cataract surgery performed locally at Berkshire Eye Surgery Center in Wyomissing. Berkshire Eye Surgery Center is owned and operated by the ophthalmologists of Berks Eye Physicians & Surgeons, and is the area's only ambulatory surgical center devoted solely to advanced vision correction procedures.
