Domenic C. Izzo, Jr., MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract and intraocular lens implant (IOL) surgery. Dr. Izzo has performed more than 15,000 cataract and intraocular lens implant procedures and was one of the first ophthalmologists in Berks County to perform the small-incision, "no stitch" cataract surgery. As a member of the acclaimed Berks Eye Physicians team, Dr. Izzo uses the highest quality surgical technologies and techniques to help patients eliminate there dependence on glasses and contact lenses. In addition, he holds advanced training in presbyopia-correcting lens implantation, laser vision correction (LASIK and PRK), glaucoma treatment, and corneal refractive therapy. Dr. Izzo and the Berks Eye Physicians team are dedicated to providing patients with comforting care and the best possible results. Drawing on Dr. Izzo's 25 years of experience as an ophthalmologist, along with a dedicated and professional team, Berks Eye Physicians is able to deliver state-of-the-art patient care in the area of laser eye surgery and moderate cataract and IOL surgery.
Dr. Izzo begins cataract surgery by administering eye-numbing drops and applying eyelid holders to prevent blinking. Next, he makes a small, "self-sealing" incision on the surface of the cornea and breaks up and removes the clouded lens through a process called phacoemulsification. Dr. Izzo then replaces the natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), which is customized for the patient. He and the patient select the IOL based on the patient's unique condition and vision goals. The most requested IOLs include AcrySof ReSTOR and ReZoom, which are multifocal lens lenses that restore both reading and distance vision. Dr. Izzo also offers the Crystalens accommodating IOL, another lens that allows patients to focus on objects near and far. In addition, he offers the Toric IOL, which is a uniquely shaped lens specifically designed to treat cataract patients who also have astigmatism.

At Berks Eye Physicians, Dr. Izzo also performs laser vision correction procedures (LASIK and PRK). In contrast to the IOLs used in cataract surgery, which replace the eye's natural lens, LASIK and PRK use the Excimer Laser to reshape the cornea, precisely reducing dependency upon spectacles. Phakic IOLs are another option for patients seeking to eliminate glasses and contact lenses.
At Berks Eye Physicians, Dr. Izzo and his team provide personalized care for each cataract surgery patient. The patient is guided through his or her entire experience by Dr. Izzo and Berks Eye's staff of highly trained and skilled technicians.
Berks Eye Physicians' patients enjoy the comfort and convenience of having their cataract surgery performed locally at Berkshire Eye Surgery Center in Wyomissing.
