Dr. Arthur Benjamin is one of California's leading ophthalmologists. He is a comprehensive eye physician and surgeon, board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Benjamin was the first surgeon in Los Angeles to perform cataract surgery with the revolutionary Alcon AcrySof ReSTOR presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens implant. Dr. Benjamin has been widely featured in both print and other media. He has written articles on eye health and cataract and refractive surgery for such publications as LA Health News, Cosmed, Focus, Afisha and Balance magazines. As an expert in cataract and refractive surgery, Dr. Benjamin has also made guest appearances on numerous television networks and channels, including KABC, FOX, KOCE, PBS, KTLA, ABC and Fox News Channel. In addition, Dr. Benjamin hosted the popular radio talk show "Seeing Clearly with Dr. Benjamin" on KLSX 97.1 FM Los Angeles.
Dr. Benjamin performs state-of-the-art, minimally invasive, suture-less cataract surgery under topical (eye drop) anesthesia. This surgery takes about five to seven minutes to complete. During cataract surgery, the cloudy (cataractous) crystalline lens is emulsified and extracted with the latest, most sophisticated ultrasound technology. Dr. Benjamin then replaces the hardened, cloudy lens with a clear intraocular lens implant (IOL). Any astigmatism is also corrected at the time of surgery. Dr. Benjamin specializes in the use of premium IOLs, including Crystalens, Crystalens HD, AcrySof ReSTOR, ReZoom, Acrysof IQ Toric and Tecnis. These 21st century lenses in the hands of an experienced surgeon turn cataract surgery into a true refractive surgery, eliminating dependence on glasses or contacts.

At the Benjamin Eye Institute, 95 percent of patients who choose premium cataract services achieve spectacle independence for distance, near and intermediate vision. These excellent results are made possible through the use of advanced diagnostic technology integrated into an EMR (electronic medical records) system. Advanced statistical analysis performed by the system yields custom nomograms for lens calculation and astigmatism management. The EMR technology, combined with thorough patient evaluation and careful lens selection, allows Dr. Benjamin to deliver the most precise vision correction results possible.
Dr. Benjamin offers patients a full range of multifocal and accommodating lenses available in the United States. Each type of lenses has its own set of advantages. During a cataract consultation, a surgical plan is crafted to suite the unique visual needs of each individual patient. At the Benjamin Eye Institute, we take pride in custom-tailoring your cataract care. You never see associates or substitutes. Dr. Benjamin personally performs all pre-operative, operative and post-operative care.
Cataract surgery offers an opportunity to dramatically improve one's quality of life. This is accomplished by improving the quality of vision, all while eliminating the need for glasses or contacts. We advise patients considering cataract surgery to thoroughly research and evaluate options available to them. The following is a short summary of some of these options. For more detailed information, visit our website www.benjamineye.com or call our office for a consultation at (800) 900-5043.
Email the SurgeonAstigmatism is an irregularity in the shape of the cornea that results in distortion of images produced on the retina. At the time of cataract surgery, astigmatism may be corrected using one of two methods – limbal relaxing incisions (LRI) or placement of Toric IOLs. Astigmatism management is crucial for optimal performance of premium presbyopia–correcting lenses.
Presbyopia is a loss of multi-focality of the eye, which creates a need for bifocal glasses. Crystalens and Crystalens HD are the only truly accommodating IOLs. They gently change their shape under the influence of the focusing muscles of the eye, much like your natural lens used to do before you turned 40. These lenses restore your eyes' ability to smoothly change focus from far to near objects.
The multifocal Tecnis, AcrySof ReSTOR and ReZoom IOLs are diffractive pseudo-accommodating IOLs. These lenses have special optical properties that impart multi-focality to your eyes, giving you the depth of focus from distance to near. Acrysof IQ Toric is a specially designed IOL that improves distance vision by treating high degrees of astigmatism, eliminating distortion and providing patients with crisp distance vision. Acrysof IQ Toc is frequently used in monovision arrangements.
In addition to cataract surgery, Dr. Benjamin offers other eye services, including all-laser LASIK surgery. He also offers Visian implantable lenses as a vision correction alternative to LASIK, as well as eye glasses and contact lenses.
