Omar E. Awad, MD, FACS, is a top board-certified ophthalmologist who helps cataract surgery Minneapolis patients see more clearly without the need for prescription or contact lenses. Dr. Awad has more than 16 years of cataract removal experience and has completed more than 6,000 cataract surgeries. Patients turn to Dr. Awad to achieve better vision with precise surgical results. As evidenced by his post as adjunct assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Dr. Awad is recognized as one of the most knowledgeable and well-respected cataract surgeons in Minneapolis and beyond.
Cataract removal surgery is a relatively fast procedure, and is not typically painful. Dr. Awad applies a topical anesthesia before making a tiny incision in the corner of the eye. He then accesses the cataractous lens through the incision, gently breaking up the cloudy lens with high-frequency sound waves before washing the pieces away with pulses of fluid. Once he clears the eye of the cataractous parts, Dr. Awad replaces the natural lens with an intraocular lens implant (IOL).
Intraocular lenses can help patients achieve clear vision at multiple distances. Dr. Awad has a wide breadth of expertise when it comes to the many types of IOLs available, including multifocal and toric lenses, the latter of which also corrects astigmatism.
Aside from offering patients in Minneapolis cataract surgery, Dr. Awad is also a leading provider of LASIK and other types of refractive surgery. In fact, Dr. Awad has completed more than 69,000 LASIK procedures through his partnership with LasikPlus Minneapolis.
