Cataract surgery is a modern miracle. Intraocular lens implantation at the time of cataract surgery was first performed by the British surgeon, Sir Harold Ridley, who worked at both Moorfields and St Thomas' Hospital in London, and his legacy has improved the lives of millions of people around the world. Modern cataract surgery is painless, micro-incision surgery that is performed in around 20 minutes, allowing the patient to walk out of the theatre with new sight. Advances in lens development now offer the possibility of astigmatism correction and multifocal lenses for distance, intermediate and near visual correction.
Dr. Angunawela performs cataract surgery with no-needle anesthesia. The option of sedation and general anesthesia is also available for those patients who may be nervous. During your consultation Dr. Angunawela will discuss the options and provide a recommendation as to which lens best suits your lifestyle and needs. He prefers the high definition Rayner aspheric intraocular lens implant, which is available in standard, toric (to correct astigmatism) and bespoke (made to order) models depending on your needs and the anatomy and refraction of your eye. For patients requiring premium multifocal lenses, Dr. Angunawela prefers the Oculentis M-Plus lens, which delivers excellent results. As a surgeon who performs complex cataract and transplant surgery, he has the experience to deal with even the most difficult cases of cataracts.

Dr. Angunawela also offers "bioptics," a combination of cataract surgery and laser vision correction for near-perfect vision. He also offers cutting edge Premium Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery using the Optimedica laser system. Laser cataract surgery is the newest advance in this field.
Dr. Angunawela consults exclusively at Moorfields Eye Hospital. All surgeries are carried out there.

"…My wife and I especially want to thank you for your excellent care and concerns for our daughter. Your follow up visits and phone calls to our daughter were greatly appreciated and reassured us that she was not only getting excellent care, but in the hands of a kind, compassionate surgeon. It was so difficult for us to have that faith and trust with an ocean separating us from our daughter and her medical care providers. Your attention to our daughter was above and beyond the norm. We sincerely thank you; however simple words could never express the depth of our appreciation. Stacy plans on returning to London in Sept. to complete her Master’s degree and will be seeing you in follow up." Victor and Joy Soderstrom, Minnesota, USA
"I am sure that a cataract operation is quite routine for you and your team, but I found the results to be utterly amazing and my treatment at Moorfields exemplary.
A procedure that I was quite frankly dreading was carried out in a manner that put me at ease and was painless. The professionalism of your nurses and doctors was second to none.
My sight has dramatically improved, colors, contrast and definitions are all on another level compared with before the operation." Tim, Photographer, London
